Symptom Troubleshooting: USB device does not function

USB device does not function (with navigation)

NOTE:

- Check the vehicle battery condition first. Testing and Inspection

- Check the connectors for poor connections or loose terminals.

- Make sure you have the customer's USB device to use for testing.

- Not all players and player functions work with the USB adapter. Always test the customers USB device in a known-good vehicle of the same year and trim (if possible). Technologies change and are updated frequently which may result in that USB devices may work in newer vehicles, but not in older vehicles of the same model.

- Make sure that the music player connected to the USB port works properly.

- The USB memory used for testing should conform to the USB mass storage class standard.

- The USB function is not compatible with a USB memory of 128 MB or less.

- The music must be saved to the player as WMA (Windows Media Audio) files or MP3. MP3 files saved in a variable bit rate are not compatible.

- If UNSUPPORTED appears on the display, the vehicle is OK, there is a software problem with the USB device.

1. Connect a known-good music player to the USB port.

2. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).

3. Press the AUX button, and check if it changes to USB mode.

Does it change to the USB mode?
YES - Go to step 4.

NO - Go to step 18.


4. Check that the customer's USB memory device functions properly when it is connected to a known-good vehicle.

Does the device work properly?
YES - Go to step 5.

NO - If the USB port is OK, the music player or the music device cable is either defective or incompatible.


5. Return to the customer's vehicle with the customer's USB memory device, and check if NO DATA appears when the music player is connected to the USB port.

Does NO DATA appear?
YES - Go to step 6.

NO - Go to step 10.


6. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

7. Check the connectors at USB adapter unit connector B (5P), the USB adapter cable, and the USB adapter.

Are the connectors and terminals connected properly?
YES - Go to step 8.

NO - Repair the connection, and recheck.


8. Disconnect USB adapter unit connector B (5P).

9. Check for continuity between terminals of USB adapter connector B (5P) and the USB adapter 5P connector according to the table.





Is there continuity?
YES - Replace the USB adapter unit. USB Adapter Unit Replacement

NO - There is an open in the wire(s) between the USB adapter unit and the USB adapter. Replace the affected shielded harness.






10. Check the XM operation on the navigation display.

Are the system working properly on the navigation screen?
YES - Go to step 11.

NO - Go to XM radio display is blank and no station information is displayed. Error Code: XM NO SIGNAL Or XM ANTENNA Is Displayed (With Navigation)


11. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

12. Check that the audio-navigation unit connectors and the USB adapter unit connectors properly connected.

Are the connectors properly connected?
YES - Go to step 13.

NO - Connect the connectors and recheck.


13. Measure the voltage between body ground and USB adapter unit connector A (14P) terminal No. 1.

Is there battery voltage?
YES - Go to step 14.

NO - Repair an open in the wire between the audio-navigation unit and the USB adapter unit.






14. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).

15. Measure the voltage between body ground and USB adapter unit connector A (14P) terminal No. 11.

Is there less than 0.2 V?
YES - Go to step 16.

NO - Repair an open or high resistance in the wire between the audio-navigation unit and the USB adapter unit.






16. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

17. Measure the voltage between body ground and USB adapter unit connector A (14P) terminal No. 2.

Is there 10 V or more present?
YES - Go to step 19.

NO - Go to step 18.






18. Measure the voltage between body ground and audio-navigation unit connector E (14P) terminal No. 2.

Is there 10 V or more present?
YES - Repair an open or short in the wire(s) between the audio-navigation unit and the USB adapter unit.

NO - Substitute a known-good audio-navigation unit Audio-Navigation Unit Removal/Installation (With Navigation) and recheck. If 10 V or more are present, replace the original audio-navigation unit. Audio-Navigation Unit Removal/Installation (With Navigation)






19. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).

20. Measure the voltage between body ground and audio-navigation unit connector E (14P) terminal No. 2.

Is there 2.0 V or more present?
YES - Substitute a known-good audio-navigation unit, Audio-Navigation Unit Removal/Installation (With Navigation) and recheck. If less than 2.0 V are present, replace the original audio-navigation unit.

NO - Go to step 21.






21. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

22. Disconnect audio-navigation unit connector E (14P) and USB adapter unit connector A (14P).

23. Check for continuity between terminals of audio-navigation unit connector E (14P) and USB adapter unit connector A (14P) according to the table.





Is there continuity?
YES - Substitute a known-good USB adapter unit USB Adapter Unit Replacement, then reconnect all of the connectors and recheck. If the symptom/indication goes away, replace the original USB adapter unit. If the symptom/indication is still present, replace the audio-navigation unit. Audio-Navigation Unit Removal/Installation (With Navigation)

NO - There is an open in the wire(s) between the audio-navigation unit and the USB adapter unit. Replace the affected shielded harness.
