Removal
REMOVALWARNING
- Make sure jacks and safety stands are placed properly, and hoist brackets are attached to correct position on the engine.
- Apply parking brake and block rear wheels so car will not roll off stands and fall on you while working under it.
CAUTION: Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted surfaces.
NOTE: The radio may have a coded theft protection circuit. Be sure to get the customer's code number before
- Disconnecting the battery.
- Removing the No.43 (10 A) fuse. (Under-hood fuse/relay box)
- Removing the radio.
After service, reconnect power to the radio and turn it on.
When the word "CODE" is displayed, enter the customer's 5-digit code to restore radio operation.
1. Disconnect the negative (-) and positive (+) cables from the battery, then remove the battery.
2. Drain the transmission oil. Maintenance
3. Remove the battery base and base stay.
4. Remove the intake air duct and air cleaner assembly.
5. Remove the intake control vacuum tank and bracket.
NOTE: Do not disconnect the hoses.
6. Disconnect the starter motor cables, then remove the starter motor.
7. Disconnect the back-up light switch connectors and transmission ground cable.
8. Remove the wire harness clamp.
9. Shift the transmission into reverse.
10. First remove the wire bracket, then disconnect the wires from the top housing of the transmission.
NOTE: Remove both wires and the bracket together.
CAUTION: Take care not to bend the wires
11. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) connector and remove the VSS/power steering speed sensor, but leave its hoses connected.
12. Remove the slave cylinder.
NOTE:
- Do not operate the clutch pedal once the slave cylinder has been removed.
- Take care not to bend the clutch pipe.
13. Remove the clutch damper mounting bolts, and raise the clutch damper.
CAUTION: Take care not to bend the clutch pipes.
14. Remove the cotter pins and loosen the castle nuts, then separate the ball joints and lower arms on both sides.
15. Remove the right damper fork bolt.
16. Remove the right radius rod.
17. Remove the driveshafts and intermediate shaft.Drive Axles, Bearings and Joints
NOTE: Coat all precision finished surfaces with clean engine oil or grease. Tie plastic bags over the driveshaft ends.
18. Remove the center beam.
19. Remove the front engine stiffener (H22A1 engine) and clutch cover.
20. Remove the intake manifold bracket.
21. Remove the rear beam stiffener.
22. Remove the three rear engine mount bracket mounting bolts.
23. Place a floor jack under the transmission and raise the transmission just enough to take weight off of the mounts.
24. Remove the transmission mount and mount bracket.
25. Remove the two upper transmission housing mounting bolts.
26. Remove the three lower transmission housing mounting bolts.
27. Pull the transmission away from the engine until it clears the mainshaft.
