Horn Switch: Testing and Inspection
CAUTION:^ All SRS wire harnesses are covered with yellow insulation. Before you disconnect any part of an SRS wire harness, disconnect the airbag connectors.
^ Whenever the ignition switch is ON (II), or has been turned OFF for less than three minutes, be careful not to bump the SRS unit; the airbags could accidentally deploy and cause damage or injuries.
^ For additional precautions, refer to the Air Bags and Seat belts.
NOTE: The original radio has a coded theft protection circuit. Be sure to get the customer's code number before
- disconnecting the battery.
- removing the No. 32 (7.5 A) fuse from the under- hood fuse/relay box.
- removing the radio.
After service, reconnect power to the radio and turn it on. When the word "CODE" is displayed, enter the customer's 5-digit code to restore radio operation.
1. Disconnect the negative cable, then disconnect the positive cable from the battery, and wait at least three minutes.
Horn Switch Test:
2. Remove the dashboard lower cover and knee bolster.
3. Remove the glove box.
4. Disconnect the airbag connectors.
NOTE: The airbag connectors are the spring-loaded type.
Horn Switch Test:
5. Disconnect the cable reel sub-harness 3P connector from the main wire harness.
Horn Switch Test:
6. Check for continuity between the No. 2 terminal of the cable reel sub-harness and body ground with the horn switch pressed.
^ If there is continuity, the horn switch is OK.
^ If there is no continuity, go to step 7.
7. Remove the driver's airbag assembly.
8. Check for continuity between the No. 2 terminal of the cable reel sub-harness 3P connector and horn positive terminal.
^ If there is continuity, but the horn does not work, repair or replace the horn switch.
Horn Switch Test:
^ If there is no continuity, replace the cable reel.
9. If all tests prove OK, reinstall the driver's airbag assembly, and reconnect the cable reel sub-harness connector to the main wire harness.
10. Reconnect the driver's and front passenger 5 airbag connectors.
11. Reconnect the battery positive cable, then the negative cable.
12. After installing, confirm proper system operation:
^ Turn the ignition switch ON (II); the SRS indicator light in the gauge assembly should come on for about six seconds and then go OFF.
^ Make sure the horn works.
