Exhaust Gas Recirculation: Testing and Inspection
PROCEDURE1. Disconnect exhaust gas recirculation vacuum line from exhaust gas recirculation valve.
2. Connect a hand held vacuum pump to exhaust gas recirculation vacuum line.
3. Run engine until it reaches normal operating temperature.
4. With engine at idle apply 6 to 8 inches of vacuum and observe exhaust gas recirculation diaphragm movement. The diaphragm should move freely up and down.
5. Engine should run rough or stall. If exhaust gas recirculation valve does not operate as specified, check vacuum lines for kinks or physical damage.
6. If vacuum lines are satisfactory, replace exhaust gas recirculation valve.
7. If exhaust gas recirculation valve operates as specified, start engine and run until normal operating temperature is reached.
8. Check vacuum hose for vacuum. If no vacuum is present, check vacuum hose routing of the entire system. If routing is good, replace exhaust gas recirculation control solenoid.
