Timing Belt Noise

SYMPTOM

A whine or chirping noise can be heard coming from the front of the engine at idle or just above idle.

PROBABLE CAUSE

The timing belt is tensioned too tight.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Adjust the timing belt tension according to the procedure given in this service bulletin.

NOTE:
This procedure applies only to 1996 Civics. The procedure in the service manual should be used for all other years.

1. Start the engine. Let it run until it is warmed up (the cooling fan cycles on and off twice).

2. Turn off the engine. Connect the PGM tester and monitor the coolant temperature. Let the coolant cool down to 135°F (57°C). (This should take about an hour in an ambient temperature of about 75°F.)

3. Rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise until either the No. 1 or No. 4 piston is at TDC.

4. Remove the plug for the timing belt tensioner bolt.

5. Loosen the timing belt tensioner bolt 1/2 turn. Then torque the bolt to 44 N.m (33 lb-ft).

6. Install the plug.
