B1 - "A" and "B" Pillar Seal Replacement

SEAL REPLACEMENT PROCEDURES

NOTE
If one original-type seal is faulty. replace all tour seals. New-type seals (installed on cars made in May 1994 and later) may be replaced individually.

B1 - "A" PILLAR, SIDE, AND "B" PILLAR SEALS

"A" PILLAR SEAL

1. Carefully remove the "A" pillar seal. Save the two plastic clips from the upper corners and the four screws for reuse. (New lower clips are captive in the new seal.)

2. Inspect the square hole in each pillar, where the yellow-green grommets came from, for any distortion caused by their removal. If the metal is bent up, carefully flatten it with a small hammer.

3. Remove all traces of the old adhesive from the "A" pillar and windshield header with 3M Adhesive Cleaner and a shop towel. If all of the old adhesive is not removed, the new seal will not stick properly. Use a plastic scraper (available at local paint and hardware stores) to avoid breaking the paint surface You may also cover the adhesive with duct tape and then peel the tape off-the adhesive should come off with it.

4. Apply a bead of Cemedine around the edge of each square hole, and then install the two new white grommets supplied with the new seal. Position each grommet so the slot in it forms the letter I, not the letter H.

5. Inspect the two remaining white grommets for holes made by improperly installed screws. If you find any holes, replace the damaged grommets in the same way you replaced the yellow-green ones. (Order screw grommet, P/N 91620-SR2-003, H/C 4020939.)

6. Remove the two small rubber plugs from the holes in the trough of the windshield header, put a bead of Cemedine around each hole, and then reinstall the plugs. If a plug is missing. it may be stuck to the old seal. If you can't find it, cover the hole with a piece of tape, and then cover the tape with Cemedine.

7. Set the new "A" pillar seal into position On each side, line up the inside edge of the small water diverter (molded into the top of the seal) with the outside seam in the windshield header.

8. In this "dry set" position, carefully lay one corner of the seal over on the windshield, and apply a 6 mm bead of Cemedine to the header trough, the end of the seam-filler strip in the header, and down the "A" pillar flange.

NOTE
Be careful to maintain a 6 mm bead of Cemedine down the pillar. If it looks too thin in some places, apply a double layer there to ensure proper bead height.

9. Apply a 3 mm bead of Cemedine to the lower part of the "A" pillar.

10. Leave the white tape in place (it's covering the butyl adhesive), and install the "A" pillar seal in this sequence:

^ Press the upper end of the seal onto the flange at the corner of the "A" pillar.

^ Next, insert the lower end of the seal behind the molding, then attach it to the "A" pillar by installing its captive clip.

^ Attach the middle part of the seal to the "A" pillar flange.

^ Make certain the outer edge of the seal is straight and not distorted in any way.

^ Reinstall two screws and one clip at the top.

11. Repeat steps 8 thru 10 on the other side of the car.

12. To be sure the seal makes continuous contact with the Cemedine. push it down firmly into the header trough with a blunt tool. Push down with a repeated rolling motion, to "walk" the tool across the seal from each end toward the middle.

13. Peel the white tape off the adhesive on each upper corner, then go to Roof Side Seals, step 1 (below); do hot press on the seal yet to make the adhesive stick.

Roof Side Seals

1. Set the roof upside down on an appropriate pad so it won't get scratched.

2. Remove the two screws at each end of the roof side seals, and carefully pry the seals away from their retainers. Remove all traces of old sealant from the roof and the retainers, first with a plastic scraper, and then with 3M Adhesive Cleaner on a shop towel.

3. Before applying any Cemedine, install each new side seal in its retainer. Make certain that the end of each seal fits flush, with no gaps or bulges.

4. Carefully pull the end of one seal away from its retainer about 100 mm. and apply an 8 mm bead of Cemedine to the side of the retainer and the end of the roof frame as shown.

5. Remove the white tape from the butyl adhesive on the end of the seal as shown above, arid reinstall that end; do not press on the seal yet to make the adhesive stick.

6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 on each of the three remaining side seal ends.

7. Loosely install the screws in the end of each side seal. Then push each seal all the way in (to take up the slack in the screw slots), and hold it in place while you tighten the screws.

8. Set the roof in place on the car. Then go to A2, Side Seal Front End Fit Adjustment, and check the fit between the ends of both side seals and the "A" pillar seal.

"B" PILLAR SEAL

1. Remove the four clips and one screw from each side of the "B" pillar seal, and then remove the seal.

2. Remove all old adhesive from the "B" pillar and the "B" pillar seal retainer. First use a plastic scraper (to avoid breaking the paint surface), then use 3M Adhesive Cleaner on a shop towel. Remove a//the old sealant; if you don't, the new seal will not stick.

3. Before applying any Cemedine, set the new "B" pillar seal in place so its mold seam marks line up midway between the seams in the rear window header.

4. Without changing its position, carefully lift one corner of the new seal out of the way, and apply a 6 mm bead of Cemedine to the seal channel and then down into the seal retainer.

5. Remove the three pieces of white tape from the butyl adhesive on the new seal.

6. Install the clip through the top of the new seal, and then press the seal into its retainer. Make sure the outside lip of the seal goes over the retainer flange.

7. Reinstall the screw at the top, and then check that the lower edge of the seal matches the contour of the body, or is no more than 3 mm higher. If necessary, pull the seal up (starting from the bottom) or down (starting from the top) every few inches as shown.

8. Insert the lower end of the seal behind the door opening trim, and install the three lower clips.

9. Repeat steps 4 thru 8 on the other side of the car.

10. To be sure the seal makes continuous contact with the Cemedine, push it down firmly into the header trough with a blunt tool. Push down with a repeated rolling motion, to "walk' the tool across the seal from each end toward the middle.

11. Remove excess Cemedine from the body with HondaBrite Cleaner; it will not dull the finish.

12. Repeat the entire Water Leak Test.
