BODY
Wind Noise From the Front or Rear Door
SYMPTOM
Wind noise from a front or rear door while driving at highway speeds.
PROBABLE CAUSES
^ Incorrect window adjustment.
^ Poor fit between the window and the run channel.
^ Incorrect door adjustment.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Adjust the window, apply EPT Sealer 5T under the glass run channel, and adjust the door. Be careful not to damage any interior trim parts.
1. Test drive the car with an assistant to listen for the wind noise. Have the assistant locate the general area of the noise.
NOTE:
Do not confuse wind noise with the normal sound of air moving over the car. If in doubt, test drive another car for comparison.
2. Close the window on the affected door, then inspect the fit of the glass run channel; its outer edge should touch the top of the window.
^ If the fit of the run channel is OK, go to step 7.
^ If you find a gap between the run channel and the window, continue with step 3.
3. Remove the door panel from the affected door. Refer to section 20 of the appropriate service manual for instructions.
4. Adjust the window.
Front Door:
^ Loosen the roller guide bolts and move the window backward. After moving it, the rear edge of the window should be closer to the rear of the run channel, and the top edge should be parallel to the top of the run channel.
^ Tighten the roller guide bolts to 8 Nm (5.8 lb-ft).
Rear Door:
^ Loosen the glass mounting bolts and move the window forward. After moving it, the front edge of the window should be closer to the front of the run channel, and the top edge should be parallel to the top of the run channel.
^ Tighten the glass mounting bolts to 10 Nm (7.2 lb.).
5. Reinstall the door panel. Refer to section 20 of the appropriate service manual for instructions.
6. Apply EPT Sealer 5T under the glass run channel of the affected door.
Front and Rear Door:
^ Open the window.
^ Cut two strips of EPT Sealer 5T, both 100 mm long.
Front Door:
^ Pull the glass run channel out of the top rear corner of the window frame. Starting in the corner, apply the EPT Sealer 5T to the frame, one piece along the top, the other piece down the side.
Rear Door:
^ Pull the glass run channel out of the top front corner of the window frame. Starting in the corner, apply the EPT Sealer 5T to the frame, one piece along the top, the other piece down the side.
Front and Rear Door:
^ Using a flat tip screwdriver wrapped in a shop towel, carefully reinstall the run channel into the frame.
^ Spray silicone inside the entire length of the glass run channel, then wipe out the excess with a clean shop towel.
7. Inspect the rear edge of the door to make sure it fits flush with the body.
4-Door Car:
^ The rear edge of the front door should be flush with the front edge of the rear door, and the rear edge of the rear door should be flush with the quarter panel.
2-Door and 3-Door Car:
^ The rear edge of the door should be flush with the quarter panel.
8. Adjust the door striker if the rear edge of the door is not flush with the body. Refer to section 20 of the appropriate service manual for instructions.
9. With the window open and the door closed, check that you see no gap between the sealing edge of the weatherstrip and the door molding.
Front Door:
^ On the window frame, look along the top edge and down the A pillar.
Rear Door:
^ On the window frame, look from front to rear along the top edge.
10. If you see a gap between the weatherstrip and the molding, or if the edge of the weatherstrip folds in when the door opens, adjust the window frame up and forward.
Front and Rear Door:
^ With a cloth-covered rubber mallet, tap on the top edge of the window frame several times until the gap is gone.
^ Open and close the door to confirm that the weatherstrip compresses properly and does not fold in. Readjust if needed.
11. Inspect the sealing edge of the weatherstrip, along the top of the window frame (front and rear doors), and along the A pillar (front doors). The sealing edge should be recessed no more than 1.0 mm from the door molding.
12. If the weatherstrip is recessed more than 1.0 mm, adjust the window frame outward.
Front and Rear Door:
Insert a rubber mallet between the window frame and the body.
^ Adjust the window frame outward by carefully pushing the door against the mallet. Repeat until the weatherstrip is recessed no more than 1.0 mm from the molding.
13. If the weatherstrip sticks out past the molding, adjust the window frame inward.
Front and Rear Door:
^ Place a rubber mallet on the door striker, and press the door against the mallet. Repeat until the weatherstrip is recessed 1.0 mm from the molding.
14. Inspect the rear edge of the weatherstrip.
Front Door:
^ The weatherstrip should touch the B pillar.
Rear Door:
^ The weatherstrip should touch the C pillar.
15. If you see a gap between the rear edge of the weatherstrip and the body, adjust the weatherstrip.
Front and Rear Door:
^ With a cloth covered rubber mallet, tap along the rear edge of the window frame several times until the gap is gone.
16. Check the fit between the front door window frame and the body.
4-Door Car:
^ The upper rear edge of the front door window frame should be flush with the rear door.
2-Door and 3-Door Car:
^ The upper rear edge of the window frame should be flush with the quarter panel.
17. If the window frame sticks out from the body, adjust it inward.
Front and Rear Door:
^ Insert a rubber mallet between the lower rear corner of the window frame and the body.
^ Press the door against the mallet, and carefully push on the top corner of the frame.
^ Close the door and inspect the fit. Readjust if needed.
18. Test drive the car to make sure the abnormal wind noise is gone.
