Intake Air System
PURPOSEThe Intake Air System consists of an Air Cleaner, Intake Air Pipe and Duct, Throttle Body, Intake Air Bypass (IAB) Control System, Intake Control System, Intake Manifold and a resonator in the intake air pipe provides additional silencing. All these components are used in conjunction with each other to control and regulate intake air as it is drawn into the engine.
OPERATION
As the intake air flows through the intake air system, the air cleaner assembly keeps dirt, dust and foreign matter from entering the intake air stream. The throttle body has a manually operated "butterfly" valve which regulates the amount of intake air flowing into the engine. The Intake Manifold, which houses the IAB Control System, routes the intake air into the cylinder head. When the engine speed is below 4600 rpm, the IAB Control System routes intake air through the long intake path within the intake manifold and high torque is delivered. At engine speeds above 4600 rpm the IAB Control System routes intake air through the short intake path reducing resistance in airflow. In addition, when the engine speed is below 4000 rpm the intake control system, housed in the air box assembly, routes intake air through the long air intake system including the air box resonator for increased torque and reduced air intake noise.
