SRS Unit Retrofit
BACKGROUND
DTC TROUBLESHOOTING INFORMATION
After the SRS unit and SRS main harness is replaced, do not use the original DTC troubleshooting. If you are troubleshooting a vehicle that has the SRS retrofit kit installed, you must use the new troubleshooting procedures designed for the SRS retrofit kit, which are available on ISIS only. You can identify these vehicles by checking for a SRS retrofit label attached to the DLC connector and the service check connector.
PARTS INFORMATION
GENERAL PRECAUTIONS
^ Carefully inspect the SRS unit before you install it. Do not install any SRS unit that shows signs of being dropped or improperly handled, such as dents, cracks, or deformation.
^ Except when doing electrical inspections, always turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0), disconnect the negative cable from the battery, then wait for 3 minutes before starting work. Do not reconnect the negative battery cable until your repair is complete.
^ Be careful not to bump or impact the SRS unit when the ignition switch is in ON (II), and wait at least 3 minutes after the ignition switch is turned to LOCK (0).
^ Before you begin work, make sure you have the antitheft code for the audio unit, and write down the audio presets before disconnecting the negative cable from the battery.
^ Before returning the vehicle to the customer, enter the anti-theft code for the audio system, then enter the audio presets and set the clock.
WIRING PRECAUTIONS
^ Some of the SRS wiring can be identified by a special yellow outer covering, and the SRS connectors can be identified by their yellow color.
^ Never attempt to modify, splice, or repair the SRS wiring. If there is an open or damage in the SRS wiring, replace the SRS main harness.
^ Be sure to install the harness wires so that they are not pinched or interfering with other components.
^ Make sure all SRS ground locations are clean and grounds are securely fastened for optimum metal-to-metal contact. Poor grounding can cause intermittent problems that are difficult to diagnose.
^ Do not use any silicone-based cleaners or lubricants on any SRS connectors or terminals.
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
NOTE:
^ Make sure the SRS unit is installed securely.
^ Do not disassemble the SRS unit.
^ Store the SRS unit in a cool (less than 104°F/40°C) and dry (less than 80% humidity, no moisture) place. Do not spill water or oil on the SRS unit, and keep it from dust.
^ During installation or replacement, be careful not to bump (with an impact wrench, hammer, etc.) the area around the SRS unit. The airbags could accidentally deploy and cause damage or injuries.
^ Do not work with dirty hands.
^ Take care not to scratch the dashboard and related parts.
^ Lay a shop towel under the parts when working on them to protect them from scratches or other damage.
^ When prying with a flat tip screwdriver, wrap it with protective tape to prevent damage.
COMPONENT/ WIRING LOCATION INDEX
1. Make sure you have the anti-theft code for the audio system, then write down the audio presets.
2. Disconnect the battery negative cable, and wait at least 3 minutes before beginning work.
3. Remove the glove box:
^ Open the glove box, and remove the screw from the glove box damper.
^ Remove the bolts, then remove the glove box.
4. Connect the short connectors (RED):
NOTE:
To avoid accidental airbag deployment and possible injury, always connect the short connectors to the driver's and passenger's airbag connectors before working near any SRS wiring.
Driver's side
^ Remove the access panel from the steering wheel, then remove the short connector (RED) from the panel.
^ Disconnect the 3P connector between the driver's airbag and the cable reel, then connect the short connector (RED) to the driver's airbag 3P connector.
Passenger's side
^ Remove the short connector (RED) from its holder.
^ Disconnect the 3P connector between the passenger's airbag and the SRS main harness, then connect the short connector (RED) to the GLOVE BOX passenger's airbag 3P connector.
5. Remove the dashboard lower cover and the knee bolster:
^ Remove the screws, detach the clips, then remove the dashboard lower cover.
^ Remove the bolts, then pull up the knee bolster and remove it.
6. Remove the rear console:
^ Apply the parking brake.
^ Follow the numbered sequence above.
7. Remove the center console:
Center console (A/T model)
^ Move the shift lever to N or D.
^ To prevent damage, wrap the shift lever with a shop towel.
^ To prevent damage, apply protective tape to the area shown.
Center console (M/T model)
^ Remove the shift lever knob.
^ Remove the screws.
^ To prevent damage, apply protective tape to the areas shown.
^ Detach the clips by sliding the center console towards the rear.
^ Pull the sides of the center console outward.
^ Starting at the front, lift the center console up, and remove it.
8. Remove the audio unit/audio panel:
Without audio unit
Carefully remove the screws, disconnect the connector, then remove the audio panel.
With audio unit
Carefully remove the six screws, then disconnect the 16P connector and the antenna lead. Detach the connector clip, then remove the audio unit.
9. Disconnect all the connectors and harness clips as shown, then remove the SRS main harness. Start at the driver's side and move in this order:
a) driver's side
b) steering column
c) center console area
d) audio unit area
e) glove box area
NOTE:
The connectors are double-locked. Be careful not to break them.
Driver's side
^ Disconnect connector A. First lift the connector lid with a thin screwdriver, then press on the connector tab, and pull out the connector.
^ Disconnect connectors B and C, and detach the three harness clips.
Steering column
Disconnect connector D by removing the connector holder.
Center console area
^ Remove the clips, then remove the left side cover from the SRS unit.
^ Remove the TORX bolt to disconnect the ground wire. Disconnect the SRS main harness 18P connector from the SRS unit.
^ Remove the harness clip from under the carpet.
Audio unit area
^ Detach the harness clips in the areas shown.
Glove box area
^ Detach the harness clip, then disconnect the connector.
10. Remove the SRS unit:
^ Remove the clips, then remove the right side cover from the SRS unit.
^ Remove the four TORX bolts from the SRS unit, then remove the SRS unit from the driver's side.
11. Install the new SRS unit in the reverse order of removal.
NOTE:
Always use new TORX bolts, and make sure they are installed straight, not at an angle.
12. Install the new SRS main harness in the reverse order of removal (see step 9), and note the routing change in the ground wire.
NOTE:
^ Make sure the SRS harness isn't pinched or interfering with other components.
^ Always use new TORX bolts, and make sure they are installed straight, not at an angle.
^ Make sure all connectors are securely connected.
13. Remove and properly reinstall the short connectors (RED) to their holders. Reconnect the airbag connectors, then reinstall the access panel and the glove box.
14. Reinstall all remaining parts.
15. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
16. Confirm proper system operation by turning the ignition switch to ON (II); the instrument panel SRS indicator should come on for about 6 seconds, then go off.
17. Enter the audio system anti-theft code and the audio presets, then set the clock.
18. Apply the retrofit identification labels in the locations shown.
