Canister Purge Control Valve: Description and Operation

PURPOSE
The Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Purge Control Diaphragm Valve controls the flow of stored fuel vapors from the EVAP Control Cannister to a ported vacuum source.

OPERATION
When the Engine coolant temperature is above 70° C (158° F) and the Throttle Position Sensor is between Idle and Full Throttle, The Engine Control Module (ECM) activates the Purge Control Solenoid Valve which allows vacuum to pass thru it to the EVAP Purge Control Diaphragm Valve. The Purge Control Diaphragm Valve applies the vacuum to the top of the EVAP Control Cannister which causes fresh air to be drawn through the Control Cannister, purging the fuel vapors stored there. The Air/Fuel Vapor mixture is drawn into the intake manifold through a ported vacuum source.
