Steering Column Lock: Service and Repair
1. On models equipped with coded theft protection, disable coded theft protection system as described under Accessories and Optional Equipment / Antitheft and Alarm Systems / Service and Repair.2. On models equipped with airbag, disarm airbag as described under Air Bags and Seat Belts / Air Bags (Supplemental Restraint Systems / Airbag System Disarming).
3. On all models, disconnect battery ground cable.
4. Remove steering wheel, then the steering column covers.
5. Center punch two shear bolts and drill their heads off with a 3/16 inch drill bit.
6. Remove shear bolts from switch body.
7. Install new ignition switch without key inserted.
8. Tighten new shear bolts finger tight, then ensure projection on ignition switch is aligned with hole in steering column.
9. Insert ignition key, then ensure key turns freely and steering wheel lock is operating properly.
10. Tighten shear bolts until hex heads twist off.
11. Restore coded theft protection system and rearm airbag.
