Reading Diagnostic Trouble Codes

When the Transmission Control Module (TCM) senses an abnormality in the input or output systems, the D4 Indicator light In the gauge assembly will blink. However, when the Service Check Connector (located to the lower right of the glove compartment) is connected with a jumper wire, the D4 indicator light will blink the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) when the ignition switch is turned ON.

If the D4 indicator light has been reported on, you can extract the fault codes as follows:

Extracting Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC):

1. Connect the Service Check Connector terminals with a jumper wire (the Service Check Connector is located under the dash on the passenger side of the car).

Extracting Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC):

2. The D4 indicator light indicates a failure code by blinking frequency. This can indicate any number of simultaneous component problems by blinking separate codes, one after another. Problem codes 1 through 9 are indicated by individual short blinks. Problem codes 10 through 15 are indicated by a series of long and short blinks. One long blink equals 10 short blinks. The number of long blinks equals the first digit, the number of short blinks equals the second digit. After determining the code, refer to Symptom-to-Component Chart. See Symptom to Component Chart Symptom-to-Component Chart

3. Some PGM-FI problems will also make the D4 indicator light come on. After repairing the PGM-FI system, disconnect the Back Up fuse (10 A) in the under-hood fuse/relay box for more than 10 seconds to reset the TCM memory.

NOTE: Disconnecting the Back up fuse also cancels the radio anti-theft code, preset stations and the clock setting. Get the customer's code number and make note of the radio presets before removing the fuse so you can reset them.

4. Remove the jumper wire when finished extracting DTC(s).
45 When troubleshooting is completed, perform the following procedures:
^ Clear the TCM DTC(s). See Clearing Diagnostic Trouble codes (DTC) Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes/TCM Reset Procedure
^ Set the radio preset stations and the clock setting.
