Auxiliary Air Valve (Idle Speed): Testing and Inspection

NOTE: Do not attempt to disassemble the Fast Idle Valve, it is factory adjusted.

INSPECTION
2.2L DOHC VTEC (USA: Si VTEC/CANADA: SR-V models)
2.3L DOHC (USA: Si/CANADA: SR models)

Fast Idle Thermo Valve And IAC Valve:






1. Remove intake air duct from throttle body, Start the engine.

Fast Idle Thermo Valve Testing:






2. Using your finger cover lower port in throttle body, making sure there is air flow with the engine cold.
a. Engine coolant temperature below 86~F, 30~C.
b. If there is no air flow, replace the Fast Idle Valve and retest.
4. Run engine until cooling fan comes on.
5. Check that thermo valve is completely closed. If not, air suction can be felt at lower port in the throttle body.
a. If any suction is felt, the valve is leaking. Replace the Fast Idle Valve and recheck.


INSPECTION
2.2L SOHC (S model)


1. Start the engine.
2. Remove the cover of the fast idle valve.

Checking Fast Idle Thermo Valve:






3. Put your finger on the valve seat area and make sure that there is air flow with the engine cold (coolant temperature below 86° F, 30° C) and idling.
a. If there is no air flow, replace the Fast Idle Valve and retest.
4. Warm up the engine to normal operating temperature (the cooling fan comes on).
5. Check that the valve is completely closed (no air suction can be felt in the valve seat area).
a. If any suction is felt, the valve is leaking. Replace the Fast Idle Valve and recheck.
