Engine: Service and Repair
1. On models equipped with radio coded theft protection system, refer to Vehicle Damage Warnings for system disarming and arming procedures. On models equipped with airbag system, refer to Technician Safety Information for system disarming and arming procedures.2. Disconnect battery ground cable, then the positive battery cable.
3. Remove radiator cap, then raise and support vehicle.
4. Remove front wheels and engine splash shield.
5. Drain coolant, transaxle fluid and engine oil. Reinstall transaxle fluid and engine oil drain plugs with new washers.
6. Lower vehicle.
7. Proceed as follows:
a. Remove air cleaner housing and intake air duct.
b. Remove pulsed secondary air injection (PAIR) vacuum tank and bracket.
8. Remove battery and battery tray, then disconnect battery cable and starter cable. When installing starter cable clamp, ensure stopper pawl is secure.
9. Relieve fuel pressure as described under Technician Safety Information.
10. Remove fuel feed hose from fuel pipe.
11. Remove resistor electrical connector on left side of engine compartment.
12. Loosen throttle cable locknut, then pull cable end from accelerator linkage.
13. Disconnect engine electrical harness connectors and clamps on right side of engine compartment.
14. Remove power cable from underhood fuse/relay box.
15. Disconnect brake booster vacuum hose and emission control vacuum tubes from intake manifold.
16. Disconnect electrical connector and vacuum tube, then remove cruise control actuator.
17. Remove engine ground cable on cylinder head.
18. Remove power steering belt and pump. Do not disconnect power steering hoses.
19. Remove A/C condenser fan shroud, then install protector plate on radiator.
20. Remove alternator belt.
21. Remove A/C belt and compressor. Do not disconnect A/C hoses.
22. Disconnect radiator and heater hoses.
23. On models equipped with automatic transaxles, remove transaxle ground cable and ATF cooler lines.
24. On models equipped with manual transaxles, remove shift and select cables.
25. Remove clutch slave cylinder and pipe/hose assembly.
26. Remove clutch damper assembly. Do not bend pipe.
27. Remove speed sensor. Do not disconnect hoses.
28. Raise and support vehicle, then remove exhaust pipe and stay.
29. On models equipped with automatic transaxles, remove shift cable at transaxle.
30. Remove damper fork, then disconnect suspension lower arm ball joint as described in Ball Joint, Lower.
31. Remove driveshafts, then move driveshaft under fender.
32. Lower vehicle.
33. Attach suitable engine lifting equipment.
34. Remove rear mounting bracket, then the front mounting bracket.
35. Remove left side engine mount.
36. Remove transaxle mount and bracket.
37. Raise hoist just enough to remove slack from chain. Ensure engine is free of hoses and electrical connectors.
38. Remove engine from vehicle.

39. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Refer to Fig. 8 for engine mount tightening specifications.
b. After refilling cooling system, bleed air from cooling system at bleed bolt with heater valve open.
c. Adjust all control cables as required.
