Failure Mode B

Failure Mode B: Short In Airbag Inflator, Open Cowl Sensor

1. Disconnect the battery negative cable and then the positive cable. Install the short connector (RED) on the airbag, refer to Air Bags and Seat Belts/Air Bags (Supplemental Restraint Systems)/Service and Repair.

Test Harness B Installation And Testing:

2. Connect Test Harness B between the SRS unit and SRS main harness 18-P connector.

Test Harness B Pinout:

3. Check for continuity between the airbag inflator terminal B1 and body ground, and between the airbag inflator terminal B7 and body ground.
^ If there is no continuity at the B1 and B7 terminals, go to step 8.
^ If there is continuity at the B1 and B7 terminals, go to step 4.

Test Harness C Installation And Testing:

4. Disconnect the cable reel harness 6-P connector from the SRS main harness, then connect Test Harness C only to the cable reel harness side of the 6-P connector.

Test Harness C Pinout:

5. Check for continuity between the No. 4 terminal and body ground (airbag assembly mounting bolt-TORX BOLT) and between the No. 5 terminal and body ground (airbag assembly mounting bolt-TORX BOLT).
^ If there is no continuity, the SRS main harness is faulty. Replace it and after reconnecting the battery cables check the voltage according to the failure mode diagnostic chart. Failure Mode Diagnostic Chart
^ If there is continuity, go to step 6.

Test Harness C Connection To Airbag Assembly:

6. Disconnect the airbag 3-P connector from the cable reel harness, then connect Test Harness C to the airbag 3-P connector.

Test Harness C Pinout:

7. Check for continuity between the No. 7 terminal and body ground (airbag assembly mounting bolt-TORX BOLT) and between No. 8 terminal and body ground (airbag assembly mounting bolt-TORX BOLT).
^ If there is no continuity, the cable reel is faulty. Replace it and after reconnecting the battery cables, then check the voltage according to the failure mode diagnostic chart. Failure Mode Diagnostic Chart
^ If there is continuity, the airbag assembly is faulty. Replace it and after reconnecting the battery cables, then check the voltage according to the failure mode diagnostic chart. Failure Mode Diagnostic Chart

Test Harness C Pinout:

8. Reconnect the battery cables, then check the resistance between the left dash sensor terminals B12 and B16, and between the right dash sensor terminals B4 and B6.
^ If resistance is 3.8-4.2 Kohm for either sensor, go to step 9.
^ If resistance is less than 3.8 Kohm for either sensor, go to step 10.

Test Harness C Pinout:

9. Check for continuity between the B4, B6, B12, B16 terminals and body ground.
^ If there is no continuity, the SRS unit is faulty. Substitute a known-good SRS unit and recheck the voltages according to the failure mode diagnostic chart. Failure Mode Diagnostic Chart
^ If there is continuity at any of the terminals, go to step 11.

Test Harness D Installation And Testing:

10. Connect Test Harness D to the dash sensor 2-P connector. Check the resistance between the No. 1 terminal and No. 2 terminal.

NOTE: The left and right sensors cannot be checked at the same time.
^ If resistance is 3.8-4.2 Kohm, replace the SRS main harness and recheck the voltages according to the failure mode diagnostic chart. Failure Mode Diagnostic Chart
^ If resistance is less than 3.8-4.2 Kohm, the respective dash sensor is faulty. Replace the dash sensor and recheck the voltages according to the failure mode diagnostic chart. Failure Mode Diagnostic Chart

Test Harness D Pinout:

11. Connect Test Harness D between the dash sensor and SRS main harness 2-P connector. Check continuity between the No. 1 terminal and body ground, and between the No. 2 terminal and body ground.
^ If there is continuity, the dash sensor is faulty. Replace it and recheck the voltages according to the failure mode diagnostic chart. Failure Mode Diagnostic Chart
^ If there is no continuity, replace the SRS main harness and recheck the voltages according to the failure mode diagnostic chart. Failure Mode Diagnostic Chart
