Engine: Service and Repair
1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then positive cable.2. Disarm airbag system as described under Air Bags and Seat Belts / Air Bags (Supplemental Restraint Systems / Airbag System Disarming).
3. Remove radiator cap, then raise and support vehicle.
4. Remove front tires and wheels, then engine splash shield.
5. Drain coolant, engine oil and transaxle fluid.
6. Lower vehicle, then open hood as far as possible.
7. Remove underhood ABS fuse/relay box.
8. Remove air intake hose, resonator and air cleaner assembly.
9. Relieve fuel pressure slowly, by loosening service bolt on fuel filter approximately one turn. Place a shop towel over fuel filter to prevent pressurized fuel from spaying over engine.
10. Disconnect fuel feed hose and charcoal canister hose from intake manifold.
11. Loosen throttle cable locknut, then pull cable end from bracket and accelerator linkage.
12. Disconnect engine electrical harness connectors from left side of engine compartment.
13. Disconnect fuel return hose and brake booster vacuum hose.
14. Disconnect engine electrical harness connectors and clamps on right side of engine compartment.
15. Disconnect battery and starter cables from underhood fuse/relay box, then remove ABS power cable from battery terminal.
16. Disconnect engine ground cable on cylinder head, then remove power steering belt and pump. Do not disconnect power steering hoses.
17. Remove A/C belt and compressor. Do not disconnect A/C hoses.
18. Remove transaxle ground cable and ATF cooler lines on automatic transaxles.
19. Disconnect radiator and heater hoses from engine.
20. Raise and support vehicle, then remove exhaust pipe and stay.
21. On models with automatic transaxle, disconnect shift control cable at transaxle.
22. On models with manual transaxle, remove clutch slave cylinder, then disconnect pipe/hose assembly. Do not disconnect clutch hose assembly.
23. Disconnect shift rod and extension rod.
24. On all models, remove damper fork, then disconnect suspension lower arm ball joint.
25. Remove driveshafts, then lower vehicle.
26. Attach suitable engine lifting equipment, then raise engine slightly to remove load on engine mounts.
27. Remove rear engine mounting brackets.
28. Remove engine support nuts. Loosen mount bolt and pivot engine side mount out of the way.
29. Remove transaxle mount nuts. Loosen mount bolt and pivot transaxle side mount out of the way.
30. Ensure engine is free of hoses and electrical connectors.
31. Remove engine from vehicle.

32. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Refer to Fig. 2 for engine mount torque specifications.
b. When installing driveshafts, use new spring clips and ensure driveshafts click into groove into differential.
c. After refilling cooling system, bleed air from cooling system at bleed bolt with heater valve open.
d. Adjust all control cables as required.
33. Rearm airbag.
