REMOVAL AND INSTALLATIONIllustrated Index
Timing Components:
D16Z6, D15Z1 engines
Timing Components:
D15B7, D15B8 engines
Removal
CAUTION: Inspect the water pump when replacing the timing belt.
NOTE:
- Turn the crankshaft so that No.1 piston is at top dead center.
- Before removing the timing belt, mark its direction of rotation if it to be reused.
1. Remove the splash shield.
2. Remove the power steering (P/S) pump. Do not disconnect the P/S hoses.
3. Remove the A/C compressor adjusting pulley with bracket and the belt (with A/C), then remove the alternator belt.
4. Remove the P/S bracket.
5. Loosen the alternator adjusting bolt and pivot nut, then remove the belt.
6. Remove the cruise control actuator.
7. Remove the engine support nuts. Loosen the mount bolt and pivot the side engine mount out of the way.
8. Remove the cylinder head cover.
D15B7, D15B8 engines
D16Z6, D15Z1 engines
9. Remove the upper cover.
10. Remove the pulley bolt and crankshaft pulley.
11. Remove the lower cover
12. Loosen the adjusting bolt 180 degrees.
13. Push the tensioner to release tension from the belt, then retighten the adjusting bolt.
14. Remove the timing belt from the pulleys.
Installation
1. Install the timing belt in the reverse order of removal; Only key points are described here.
2. Position the crankshaft and the camshaft pulleys as shown before installing the timing belt.
A) Set the crankshaft so that the No.1 piston is at top dead center (TDC). Align the groove on the teeth side of the timing belt drive pulley to the arrow pointer on the oil pump.
B) D15B7, D15B8 engines: Align the TDC marks on the camshaft pulley with the cylinder head upper surface.
D16Z6 engine: Align the TDC mark on the camshaft pulley with pointer on the back cover.
D15Z1 engine: Align the TDC marks on the camshaft pulley with pointers (triangle marks) on the back cover.
3. Install the timing belt tightly in the sequence shown. (1)Timing belt drive pulley (crankshaft), (2)Adjusting pulley, (3)Water pump pulley, (4)Camshaft pulley.
4. Loosen the adjusting bolt, and retighten it after tensioning the belt.
5. Rotate the crankshaft about 4 or 6 turns counterclockwise so that the belt positions on the pulleys.
6. Adjust the timing belt tension. (Refer to Timing Belt Adjustments)
7. Check the crankshaft pulley and the camshaft pulley at TDC.
D15B7, D15B8 engines
D16Z6 engine
D15Z1 engine
8. If the camshaft pulley is not positioned at TDC, remove the timing belt and adjust the position following image in step 2 B, then reinstall the timing belt.
9. After installation, adjust the tension of each belt.
