Differential Overhaul
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
^ Tools Required:
- J 22888-20 Universal Puller
- J 22888-30 Puller Legs
- J 34851 Differential Side Bearing Puller Plug
1. Right differential side bearing from differential carrier using a J 22888-20 with two J 22888-30 and a J 34851 for support.
2. Speedometer drive gear from differential carrier.
3. Left differential side bearing from differential carrier using the J 22888-20 with the J 22888-30 and the J 34851 for support.
4. Eight ring gear bolts and ring gear from differential carrier.
5. Pinion shaft roll pin Tom the differential carrier using a standard drift punch and hammer.
6. Pinion shaft; pinion gears, pinion washers, differential side gears and side gear selective shims from differential carrier.
Clean
- All components thoroughly with clean solvent and dry.
Inspect
All gears for cracks, chipped or broken teeth or other damage. Replace as necessary.
- Differential side bearings for roughness or excessive wear. Replace as necessary.
- Differential case gear and bearing surfaces for cracks, blue discoloration indicating overheating or other damage. Replace as necessary.
INSTALL OR CONNECT
^ Tools Required:
- J 29036 Differential Side Bearing Installer
- J 8092 Driver Handle
- J 34851 Differential Side Bearing Puller Plug
1. Side gear selective shims, differential side gears, pinion gear washers, pinion gears and pinion shaft into differential carrier.
Measure
^ Tool Required:
- J 8001 Dial Indicator Set
A. Left differential side gear end play using a J 8001. Place the J 8001 plunger between the teeth of the left side gear and move the left side gear up and down using two screwdrivers while observing the J 8001. Standard left differential side gear end play should be between 0.05 to 0.33 mm (0.002 to 0.013-inch). If left differential side gear end play is below 0.05 mm (0.002-inch), replace the left side gear selective shim with the appropriate selective shim to obtain proper left differential side gear end play. Refer to side gear selective shims table.
B. Right differential side gear end play using a J 8001. Place the J 8001 plunger on the rear of the right differential side gear and using the fingertips of both hands, gently move the right differential side gear up and down while observing the J 8001. Standard right differential side gear end play should be between 0.05 to 0.33 mm (0.002 to 0.013-inch). If right differential side gear end play is below 0.05 mm (0.002-inch), replace the right side gear selective shim with the appropriate selective shims to obtain proper right differential side gear end play. Refer to side gear selective shims table.
2. Pinion shaft roll pin into the differential carrier and pinion shaft using a standard drift punch and hammer. Roll pin should be flush with the differential carrier.
3. Apply Loctite(tm) 414 GM P/N 12345493, or equivalent, to the threaded portion of all eight ring gear bolts.
4. Ring gear to differential carrier; secure with eight differential ring gear bolts.
Tighten
- Differential ring gear bolts to 85 N.m (63 lb. ft.).
5. Left differential side bearing onto differential carrier using a J 29036, a J 8092 and the J 34851 for support.
6. Speedometer drive gear onto the differential carrier.
7. Right differential side bearing onto the differential carrier using the J 29306 with the J 8092 and the J 34851 for support.
