Installation

INSTALL OR CONNECT

^ Tools Required:
- J 28467-A Universal Support Fixture
- J 28467-89 Universal Support Fixture Adapters
- J 28712 Drive Axle Boot Protectors

1. Transaxle to engine block by carefully raising the transaxle using a suitable hydraulic jack and making sure no obstructions exist.
2. One transaxle stud to transaxle.
3. One lower engine-to-transaxle retaining-bolt and nut.

Tighten
- Lower engine-to-transaxle retaining bolt and nut to 55 N.m (40 lb. ft.).

4. Left transaxle mount and bracket to transaxle secure with two bolts.

Tighten
- Left transaxle mount bracket bolts to 55 N.m (40 lb. ft.).

5. Two retaining nuts to left transaxle mount.

Tighten
- Left transaxle mount retaining nuts to 55 N.m (40 lb. ft.).

6. Remove hydraulic jack from under transaxle.
7. Lower vehicle.
8. Raise engine at J 28467-A.
9. Raise and suitably support vehicle.
10. Rear engine mount bracket to transaxle; secure with two bolts and two nuts.

Tighten
- Rear engine mount bracket bolts and nuts to 55 N.m (40 lb. ft.).

11. Rear engine mount to bulkhead; secure with one (1) rear engine mount-to-bulkhead bolt.

Tighten
- Lower rear engine mount-to-bulkhead bolt to 55 N.m (40 lb. ft.).

12. Muffler mounting to rear engine mount bracket exhaust hanger.
13. Six flywheel-to-torque converter bolts. To lock flywheel, engage a standard flat-bladed tool with the flywheel ring gear through the slot provided at the underside of the transaxle case housing.

Tighten
- Flywheel-to-torque converter bolts to 19 N.m (14 lb. ft.).

14. Flywheel cover to transaxle ease housing secure with two bolts.

Tighten
- Flywheel cover bolts to 10 N.m (89 lb. in.).

15. Rear engine torque rod assembly to transaxle case; secure with three bolts.

Tighten
- Rear engine torque rod assembly bolts to 55 N.m (40 lb. ft.).

16. Right and left drive axle assemblies into vehicle. Refer to Drive Axle Assembly in Drive Axle.
17. Remove J 28712 from the differential-side joints and wheel-side joints of both drive axles.
18. Right and left control arms to steering knuckles; secure win two ball stud nuts and bolts.

Tighten
- Ball stud nuts and bolts to 60 N.m (44 lb. ft.).

19. Right and left splash shields to vehicle; secure with twelve retaining clips.
20. Transaxle drain plug into transaxle fluid pan.

Tighten
- Transaxle drain plug to 23 N.m (17 lb. ft.).

21. Both front tire/wheel assemblies. Refer to Steering and Suspension.
22. Lower vehicle.
23. Remove J 28467-89 and J 28467-A.
24. Negative (-) battery cable to transaxle case; secure with one bolt.

Tighten
- Negative battery cable-to-transaxle case bolt to 15 N.m (11 lb. ft.).

25. Two upper transaxle-to-engine retaining bolts.

Tighten
- Upper transaxle-to-engine retaining bolts to 55 N.m (40 lb. ft.).

26. One upper rear transaxle mount-to-bulkhead bolt.

Tighten
- Upper rear transaxle mount-to-bulkhead bolt to 55 N.m (40 lb. ft.).

27. Raise and suitably support vehicle.
28. Starter motor to transaxle; secure with two bolts.

Tighten
- Starter motor retaining bolts to 23 N.m (17 lb. ft.).

29. Electrical connections to starter motor.
30. Lower Vehicle.
31. Inlet and outlet fluid cooler hoses to fluid cooler pipes; secure with two clamps.
32. Speedometer cable into speedometer driven gear case; secure with speedometer driven gear case . retaining clip.
33. Electrical connectors to VSS, shift solenoid wiring harness and transaxle range switch.
34. Engine wiring harness bracket to rear of transaxle case; secure with two bolts.

Tighten
- Engine wiring harness bracket bolts to 16 N.m (12 lb. ft.).

35. Accelerator cable into bracket at top of transaxle case.
36. Accelerator cable adjustment nuts.
37. Shift select cable into bracket at top of transaxle case; secure with one retaining clip.
38. Shift select cable end into manual select cable joint; secure with shift select cable adjustment nut.

Adjust
- Shift select cable. Refer to Shift Select Cable.

39. TV cable to accelerator cable.

Adjust
- TV cable. Refer to TV Cable Adjustment.

40. TV cable adjustment cover.
41. Negative (-) battery cable. Refer to Battery.
42. Refill transaxle as necessary:
A. Place vehicle on a level surface.
B. Remove fluid level indicator.
C. Add approximately 1.5 liters (1.6 qts.) of Dexron (R) III automatic transmission fluid GM P/N 12346143, or equivalent, into fluid filler tube.
D. Install fluid level indicator into fluid filler tube.
E. Apply parking brake and block vehicle wheels.
F. With selector lever in "P" position, start engine. DO NOT race engine.
G. Run engine at idle and move selector lever through each range and return to the "P" position.
H. With engine running at idle, remove fluid level indicator from filler tube and wipe indicator off.
I. Reinsert fluid level indicator into filler tube making sure it is seated in its original position.
J. Remove the indicator and check the fluid level. The level should be between the "FULL HOT" and "LOW HOT" marks. If the level is below the "LOW HOT" mark, add fluid to bring the level to the "FULL HOT" mark. Bringing the fluid level from the "LOW HOT" mark to the "FULL HOT" mark requires 0.3 liters (0.3 qts.) of fluid. Use Dexron (R) automatic transmission fluid GM P/N 12346143, or equivalent.
