Differential Assembly

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT

^ Tools Required:
- J 28509-A Side Bearing Puller
- J 34851 Puller Adapter





1. LH differential side bearing from carrier using a J 28509-A with a J 34851.





2. Speedometer drive gear and RH differential side bearing from differential carrier using the J 28509-A with the J 34851.





3. Pinion shaft roll pin.
4. Pinion shaft, pinion gears, and side gears from differential carrier.
- Ring gear retaining bolts and ring gear from differential carrier.

Clean
- All parts thoroughly with solvent and air dry.

Inspect
- Gear teeth for signs of damage, excessive or uneven wear.
- Pinion gear washers and side gear washers for signs of excessive wear, distortion or damage.

INSTALL OR CONNECT





^ Tools Required:
- J 34842 Bearing Installer
- J 7079-2 Driver Handle

1. Side gear washers and side gears.
2. Pinion gear washers and pinion gears.
3. Pinion gear shaft.
4. Pinion shaft roll pin.





5. Ring gear and eight retaining bolts.

Tighten
- Ring gear retaining bolts to 90 N.m (65 lb. ft.).





6. Speedometer drive gear. Using a J 34851 and a hydraulic press, place the speedometer drive gear on the press support and center the differential carrier into the drive gear. Place the J 34851 between the press arbor and the differential carrier and slowly press the differential carrier into the drive gear.





7. Differential side bearings on the differential carrier using a J 34842 with a J 7079-2. With the seal-side of the bearings facing the carrier, tap the bearings onto the carrier evenly.





Measure
1. Left differential side gear end play using a J 8001. Place the J 8001 plunger between the teeth of the left side gear and move the left side gear up and down using two screwdrivers while observing the J 8001. Standard left differential side gear end play should be between 0.05 to 0.33 mm (0.002 to 0.013 inch). If left differential side gear end play is below 0.05 mm (0.002 inch), replace the left side gear selective shim with the appropriate selective shins to obtain proper left differential side gear end play. Refer to side gear selective shims table.





2. Right differential side gear end play using a J 8001. Place the J 8001 plunger on the rear of the right differential side gear and using the fingertips of both hands, gently move the fight differential side gear up and down while observing the J 8001. Standard right differential side gear end play should be between 0.05 to 0.33 mm (0.002 to 0.013 inch). If right differential side near end play is below 0.05 mm (0.002 inch), replace the right side gear selective shim with the appropriate selective shims to obtain proper right differential side gear end play. Refer to side gear selective shims table.
