Reaction Gear Sets
INSTALL OR CONNECT^ Tool Required:
- J 36850 Transjel Transmission Assembly Lubricant
1. Rear planetary ring gear assembly. Engage rear planetary ring gear assembly on output shaft splines.
2. Lubricate rear planetary ring gear bearing and races with J 36850.
3. Rear planetary ring gear bearing and races alternately in the following order:
A. Race (flange side up)
B. Bearing
C. Race (flange side up)
4. Inner and outer rear planetary thrust washers on the rear planetary carrier.
Important
- Lubricate both thrust washers with J 36850 so that both thrust washers will adhere to planetary carrier. The raised features on the thrust washers MUST match the impressions on the planetary carrier. Place one washer on either side of the carrier.
5. One-way clutch assembly on the rear planetary carrier.
Important
- The one-way clutch MUST be installed in the proper position. Install the one-way clutch on the rear planetary carrier and rotate by hand. The rear planetary carrier should tern freely in a clockwise direction and the one-way clutch should turn freely in a counterclockwise direction. If these conditions do not exist, the one-way clutch is backwards (upside down) on the rear planetary carrier. Remove the one-way clutch and install correctly. Make sure this check is made prior to installation.
6. Align the inner teeth of the 1st-reverse brake clutch discs.
7. Rear planetary carrier assembly. Rear planetary carrier splines should align with the grooves in between the teeth of the 1st-reverse brake clutch discs.
Inspect
- Thrust washers and races for proper installation grasping the rear planetary carrier assembly and moving it up and down gently by hand. If assembled correctly, the carrier will make a "click" sound when moved up and down. If no sound is heard, the thrust washers and races may be out of position. If so, remove rear planetary carrier assembly and reposition thrust washers and races as necessary.
8. No. 1 inner one-way clutch race snap nag into groove of transaxle case.
9. One-way clutch assembly.
Inspect
- One-way clutch for correct installation by turning the rear planetary carrier by hand. If the rear planetary carrier turns freely in a clockwise direction, the one-way clutch is installed correctly. If the rear planetary carrier turns freely in a counterclockwise direction, the one-way clutch assembly is installed backwards (upside down). Remove the one-way clutch and reinstall correctly. Then repeat the above inspection to verily correct installation.
10. Outer one-way clutch race snap ring. Snap ring should be installed by hand, fully seated with snap ring ends between lugs and accessible.
11. Sun gear pin and planetary thrust washer to rear of sun getup input drum.
Important
- Lubricate sun gear pin and thrust washer with J 36850 so that sun gear pin and thrust washer will adhere to rear of sun gear input drum.
- Sun gear pin should be fitted into the notch in the planetary thrust washer so that thrust washer will turn with sun gear input drum.
12. Sun gear input drum assembly into rear planetary carrier assembly.
Important
- Use caution not to damage the bushing inside the sun gear.
Inspect
- Thrust washers for correct installation by grasping the sun gear and moving the sun gear input drum assembly up and down gently by hand. If assembled correctly, a "click" sound is heard when the sun gear input drum is moved up and down. If no sound is heard, the thrust washers may be out of position. If so, remove the sun gear input drum and reposition thrust washers as necessary.
Important
- Lubricate front planetary carrier bearing and race with J 36850.
13. Front planetary carrier bearing and race on sun gear in the following order:
A. Bearing
B. Race (flange side down)
14. Front planetary carrier assembly by slowly meshing the carrier with the sun gear.
Inspect
- Front planetary carrier bearing and race for correct installation by grasping the front planetary carrier assembly and moving it up and down gently by hand. If installed correctly, a "click" sound will be heard when the front planetary carrier assembly is moved up and clown. If no sound is heard, the front planetary carrier bearing and race may be out of position. If so, remove the front planetary carrier assembly and reposition the bearing and race as necessary.
Important
- Lubricate front planetary ring gear inner bearing and races with J 36850.
15. Front planetary ring gear inner bearing and races on the front planetary carrier assembly in the following order.
A. Race (flange side up)
B. Bearing
C. Race (flange side down)
16. Front planetary ring gear assembly.
Inspect
- Front planetary ring gear bearing and races for correct installation by grasping the front planetary ring gear assembly and moving it up and down gently by hand. If assembled correctly, a "click" sound will be heard when the front planetary ring gear assembly is moved up and down. If no sound is heard, the bearing and races may be out of position. If so, remove the front planetary ring gear assembly and reposition the bearing and races as necessary.
