Fuel Tank Leak Test

FUEL TANK LEAK CHECK

IMPORTANT:
- Before attempting the Fuel Tank Leak Test, place a dry chemical (Class B) fire extinguisher near work area.
- Before removing the fuel tank for a suspected leak, make sure fuel hoses are not leaking onto the tank. Once removed, make sure fuel was not leaking around fuel gauge sending unit gaskets.

PROCEDURE

1. Relieve fuel system pressure. Refer to Fuel System Pressure Relief. [1][2]Fuel System Pressure Relief Procedure
2. Drain fuel tank. Refer to Draining Fuel Tank. Fuel Tank Draining Procedure
3. Remove fuel tank. Refer to Fuel Tank Replacement. Fuel Tank Replacement
4. Plug fuel feed pipe, fuel return pipe and fuel vapor hose on the fuel pump assembly.
5. Plug fuel filler neck opening.
6. Connect a piece of hose to the breather hose.
7. Submerge tank in water or apply soap solution to outside of tank.
8. Apply 7 to 15 kPa (1 to 2 psi) air pressure to the vent hose on the fuel tank.

INTERPRETING TEST RESULTS
Air bubbles appearing from fuel tank indicate a leak. Replace fuel tank if it is leaking. Refer to Service and Repair / Fuel Tank Replacement.
