Steering Column - Removal and Installation - With SIR

NOTE: Wheels must be in a straight forward position and the key must be in the Lock position when removing or installing column to ensure proper alignment of components during installation.
1. Remove inflator module as outlined in Air Bag. Refer to Air Bags and Seat Belts/Air Bags(SRS).
2. Remove steering wheel attaching nut.
3. Attach wheel puller tool Nos. J-8433-1 and J-8433-3, or equivalents, Fig. 20, then remove steering wheel.
4. Remove steering shaft trim panel.
5. Remove lower column steering trim panel attaching screws, then the trim panel.
6. Remove lower column reinforcement plate attaching screws, then the plate.
7. Disconnect steering column electrical connectors.
8. On models with automatic transaxle, remove transaxle shift interlock cable from ignition switch.
9. On all models, remove column to steering shaft joint pinch bolt, Fig. 21.
10. Remove two upper and lower column attaching bolts, then the column.
11. Measure column as shown in Fig. 22. If measurement is less than 20.96 inches, replace column.
12. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Torque upper and lower steering column attaching bolts to 10 lb ft
b. Torque steering column to steering shaft pinch bolt to 18 lb ft
