Ignition Timing: Adjustments

NOTE: Refer to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Label located in the engine compartment. Follow all instructions on the label.

1. Start engine and run until normal operating temperature is attained.

2. Stop engine, but keep key in the "ON" position for 5 seconds, then re-start engine.

3. Run engine at 2000 rpm for 5 minutes and the let idle.

4. Make sure that:

^ All electrical loads are off (wipers, heater, headlamps, etc.)

^ A/C is off, if equipped.

^ Gearshift is in neutral (manual trans.) or in park (auto. trans.)

^ Parking brake is engaged.

5. Check that idle speed is within specifications.

6. Connect a timing light to No. 1 spark plug wire.

7. Remove cap from duty check data link connector (DLC); located next to left strut tower.

8. Connect a fused jumper lead from cavity "4" to cavity "5" of duty check DLC.

Checking Ignition Timing:






9. Check timing. It should be 5 degrees ± 1 degree at idle.






10. If not within specifications, loosen distributor flange bolts and rotate distributor and repeat until timing is within specifications.

11. Remove jumper wire and verify that spark advance is working properly.
