Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

(Figure 1) Installing Cylinder Head Gasket:




Cylinder Head Bolt Tightening Sequence:






1. Relieve fuel system pressure. Refer to Fuel Delivery and Air Induction / Service and Repair / Fuel System Pressure Relief Procedure.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable.
3. Drain cooling system, then remove air cleaner assembly.
4. Disconnect the following connectors:
- Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor electrical connector.
- Coolant temperature sending unit connector.
- Early Fuel Evaporation (EFE) heater electrical connector (if equipped).
- ECT switch electrical connector.
- Throttle position sensor (TPS) electrical connector.
- Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) solenoid vacuum valve electrical connector.
- Idle Air Control (IAC) valve or Idle Speed Control (ISC) motor electrical connector.
- Ground wires to intake manifold.
- Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) electrical connector.
- TBI unit electrical connector.
- Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor electrical connector.
- Oil pressure switch electrical connector.
- Generator electrical connectors.
- Starter solenoid electrical connectors.
- Electrical connector from distributor.

5. Disconnect coil wire from distributor cap.
6. Disconnect heater hose from intake manifold and radiator hose from thermostat housing.
7. Disconnect fuel hoses from throttle body.
8. Disconnect the following vacuum hoses:
- MAP sensor hose from intake manifold.
- Evaporative emission hoses from intake manifold and tube.
- Power brake unit vacuum hose from intake manifold.
- IAC valve hose from TBI unit.
- Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) hose from cylinder head cover.

8. Remove exhaust manifold, refer to Exhaust Manifold / Service and Repair.
9. Disconnect accelerator cable from throttle body.
10. Remove timing belt and tensioner, refer to Timing Belt / Service and Repair.
11. Remove distributor from cylinder head.
12. Remove cylinder head cover.
13. Remove cylinder head attaching bolts, then remove cylinder head.
14. Reverse procedure to install.

NOTES:
- Install new cylinder head gasket as shown in (Figure 1) with the "TOP" mark provided on the gasket on top side (toward cylinder head) and on crankshaft pulley side.
- Apply oil to cylinder head bolts, then install and tighten to 73 Nm (54 ft lbs) in sequence shown in (Figure 2).
