Transmission Position Sensor/Switch: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then place shifter in Neutral position.

2. Raise and support vehicle.

3. Remove six splash shield bolts and splash shield.

4. Remove one nut, one lock washer and shift select cable from manual lever.

5. Disconnect PNP electrical connector.

6. Remove one nut, one lock washer and manual lever from manual shaft. Unstake lock plate behind manual shaft nut

7. Remove manual shaft nut and lock plate from PNP switch then PNP switch bolts and switch.

8. Reverse procedure to install noting the following:

a. Tighten manual shaft nut to 61 lb in

b. Adjust PNP switch by aligning neutral basic line scribed in PNP switch with groove in PNP switch sleeve.

c. Tighten PNP switch to 48 lb in.

d. Tighten manual lever nut to 106 lb in.

e. Adjust shift select cable by rotating manual lever counterclockwise until it reaches Park position. Rotate manual lever clockwise two detent positions until manual lever is in neutral position. Install shift select cable into manual lever and secure with cable nut Pull cable taut making sure no deflection exists.

f. Tighten shift select cable to 115 lb in.

g. Tighten left splash shield bolts to 44 lb in.

h. Tighten battery ground cable to 11 lb ft


9. Ensure proper operation of PNP switch by performing the following steps:

a. Apply parking brake and block wheels.


b. With shifter in PARK, verify starter operation, then stop engine and turn key to the RUN position.


c. Move shifter to Neutral, turn start engine and verify starter operation.

d. Verify that starter does not operate in Drive, 2nd, Low or Reverse.
