Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

REMOVE
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.

2. Relieve fuel system pressure as follows:
a. Remove fuel pump relay from main fuse panel located in engine compartment.
b. Operate engine until it stalls, then crank engine several times in three second intervals.
c. Remove fuel tank filler cap to release vapor pressure, then reinstall cap.
d. Place ignition switch in off position, then install fuel pump relay.
3. Drain cooling system, then remove air cleaner assembly.
4. Disconnect coil wire from distributor cap.
5. Disconnect electrical connector from distributor.
6. Disconnect electrical connectors from coolant temperature sender, engine coolant temperature sensor and engine cooling fan switch.
7. Disconnect electrical connector from EGR vacuum switching valve.
8. Disconnect electrical connectors from idle speed control valve, throttle position switch and fuel injector.
9. Disconnect oxygen sensor electrical connector, then detach wiring harness from clamps.
10. Disconnect ground wires from intake manifold.
11. Disconnect heater hose from intake manifold and radiator hose from thermostat housing.
12. Disconnect fuel hoses from throttle body.
13. Disconnect MAP sensor hose from intake manifold.
14. Disconnect evaporative emission hoses from intake manifold and tube.
15. Disconnect power brake unit vacuum hose from intake manifold.
16. Disconnect accelerator cable from throttle body.
17. Raise and support vehicle, then disconnect exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold.
18. Lower vehicle, then remove cylinder head cover.
19. Remove cylinder head attaching bolts, then remove cylinder head.

INSTALL
1. Reverse procedure to install. Torque cylinder head bolts to 54 ft lb in the sequence shown in image.
