Balance Shaft Module - Removal
REMOVAL
1. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the engine cover (1) and brackets.
3. Remove both cylinder head covers .
4. Install the Camshaft Holding Fixture 9555 (1) on both cylinder heads.
5. Remove the radiator Engine Cooling Radiator - Removal.
6. Remove the A/C condenser .
7. Remove the accessory drive belt Serpentine Accessory Drive Belt - Removal.
8. Remove the vacuum pump (2) and discard gasket.
9. Rotate the engine by the crankshaft damper bolt to TDC.
10. Observe the camshaft gear alignment marks (2) on the rear of the camshaft gears (1,3). If they are together, continue with the next step. If the camshaft alignment marks (2) are separated, rotate the engine by the vibration damper another 360° until the camshaft marks (2) align together and the vibration damper reaches TDC.
11. Remove the front timing chain cover (1) .
12. Paint mark or scribe the balance shaft (2) position to the engine block (1) and timing chain.
13. Paint mark or scribe the timing chain to crankshaft gear and camshaft drive gear relation.
14. Rotate the engine and remove the intake camshaft drive gear (1) lower bolt.
NOTE: The intake camshaft drive gear (1) dowel pin should align at approximately the 12 O'clock position.
15. Rotate the engine back to TDC and verify the alignment marks at the balance shaft, camshaft gear and crankshaft gear.
16. Using the camshaft Locking Pins 8929 (1), lock both left camshaft gears in place.
17. Remove the timing chain tensioner (3).
18. Remove the intake camshaft drive gear (1) remaining 2 bolts (2).
19. Separate the intake camshaft drive gear (1) and chain from the camshaft.
20. Remove the intake camshaft drive gear.
21. Remove the flexplate .
NOTE: When servicing the balance shaft, the rear balance shaft cover must be replaced.
22. Remove the rear balance shaft cover retaining bolts, remove and discard the balance shaft cover.
23. Install a 8.5 mm drift or an equivalent diameter drill bit (2) into the bore in crankcase.
24. Remove the balance shaft correctional weight retaining bolt (3) and weight.
25. Remove the 8.5 mm drift or equivalent diameter drill bit (2).
26. Remove the balance shaft retaining bracket hold down bolt (4) and remove bracket.
27. Pull the balance shaft out through the front of the engine block and remove balance shaft.
