- When Monitored:
With the ignition on.
Always perform the Pre-Diagnostic Troubleshooting procedure before proceeding.Pre-Diagnostic Troubleshooting Procedure
1. DTC IS ACTIVE
1. Ignition on, engine not running.
2. With the scan tool, Clear DTCs in the Engine Control Module (ECM).
3. Monitor the scan tool for at least two minutes.
4. Cycle the ignition key off and on several times, leaving the ignition on for at least 10 seconds at a time.
5. Start the engine.
6. Allow the engine to reach normal operating temperature.
7. With the scan tool, select View DTCs.
Is the status Active for this DTC?
Yes
- Go To 2
No
- Refer to the *CHECKING FOR AN INTERMITTENT DTC Diagnostic Procedure.
2. EGR AIRFLOW CONTROL VALVE SUPPLY CIRCUIT VOLTAGE
1. Turn the ignition off.
2. Disconnect the EGR Airflow Control Valve harness connector.
3. Turn the ignition on.
4. Measure the voltage of the EGR Airflow Control Valve Supply circuit in the EGR Airflow Control Valve harness connector.
Is the voltage above 4.5 volts?
Yes
- Go to 6
No
- Go to 3
3. EGR AIRFLOW CONTROL VALVE SUPPLY CIRCUIT SHORTED TO GROUND
1. Turn the ignition off.
2. Disconnect the Engine Control Module (ECM) connector.
3. Measure the resistance between ground and the EGR Airflow Control Valve Supply circuit in the EGR Airflow Control Valve harness connector.
Is the resistance above 1000 ohms?
Yes
- Go to 4
No
- Repair the EGR Airflow Control Valve Supply circuit for a short to ground.
- Perform the ECM Verification Test.Verification Tests
4. EGR AIRFLOW CONTROL VALVE SUPPLY CIRCUIT SHORTED TO EGR AIRFLOW CONTROL VALVE RETURN CIRCUIT
1. Measure the resistance between the EGR Airflow Control Valve Supply circuit and the EGR Airflow Control Valve Return circuit in the EGR Airflow Control Valve harness connector.
Is the resistance above 1000 ohms?
Yes
- Go to 5
No
- Repair the EGR Airflow Control Valve Supply circuit for a short to the EGR Airflow Control Valve Return circuit.
- Perform the ECM Verification Test.Verification Tests
5. EGR AIRFLOW CONTROL VALVE SUPPLY CIRCUIT OPEN OR HIGH RESISTANCE
1. Measure the resistance of the EGR Airflow Control Valve Supply circuit between the EGR Airflow Control Valve harness connector and the Engine Control Module (ECM) harness connector.
Is the resistance below 10.0 ohms?
Yes
- Go to 10
No
- Repair the EGR Airflow Control Valve Supply circuit for an open circuit or high resistance.
- Perform the ECM Verification Test.Verification Tests
6. EGR AIRFLOW CONTROL VALVE
1. With the scan tool, Clear DTCs.
2. With the scan tool, select View DTCs.
NOTE: The scan tool should display a EGR Airflow Throttle Position Sensor high voltage or open DTC with the EGR Airflow Control Valve connector disconnected.
Does the scan tool display the Sensor DTC(s) as described above?
Yes
- Replace the EGR Airflow Control Valve.
- Perform the ECM Verification Test.Verification Tests
No
- Go to 7
7. EGR AIRFLOW CONTROL VALVE POSITION SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO GROUND
1. Turn the ignition off.
2. Disconnect the Engine Control Module (ECM) harness connector.
3. Measure the resistance between ground and the EGR Airflow Control Valve Position Sensor Signal circuit in the EGR Airflow Control Valve harness connector.
Is the resistance above 1000 ohms?
Yes
- Go to 8
No
- Repair the EGR Airflow Control Valve Position Sensor Signal circuit for a short to ground.
- Perform the ECM Verification Test.Verification Tests
8. EGR AIRFLOW CONTROL VALVE POSITION SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO EGR AIRFLOW CONTROL VALVE RETURN CIRCUIT
1. Measure the resistance between the EGR Airflow Control Valve Position Sensor Signal circuit and the EGR Airflow Control Valve Return circuit in the EGR Airflow Control Valve harness connector.
Is the resistance above 1000 ohms?
Yes
- Go to 9
No
- Repair the EGR Airflow Control Valve Position Sensor Signal circuit for a short to the EGR Airflow Control Valve Return circuit.
- Perform the ECM Verification Test.Verification Tests
9. EGR AIRFLOW CONTROL VALVE POSITION SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT OPEN OR HIGH RESISTANCE
1. Measure the resistance of the EGR Airflow Control Valve Position Sensor Signal circuit between the EGR Airflow Control Valve harness connector and the Engine Control Module (ECM) harness connector.
Is the resistance below 10.0 ohms?
Yes
- Go to 10
No
- Repair the EGR Airflow Control Valve Position Sensor Signal circuit for an open circuit or high resistance.
- Perform the ECM Verification Test.Verification Tests
10. ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM)
1. Using the wiring diagram/schematic as a guide, inspect the wiring and connectors between the EGR Airflow Control Valve and the Engine Control Module (ECM).
2. Look for any chafed, pierced, pinched, or partially broken wires.
3. Look for broken, bent, pushed out or corroded terminals.
4. Monitor the scan tool data relative to this circuit and wiggle test the wiring and connectors.
5. Look for the data to change or for the DTC to reset during the wiggle test.
6. Search for any Technical Service Bulletins that may apply.
Were any problems found?
Yes
- Repair as necessary.
- Perform the ECM Verification Test.Verification Tests
No
- Replace the Engine Control Module (ECM).
- Perform the ECM Verification Test.Verification Tests
