Description
DESCRIPTION
An electronic automatic transmission gear selector indicator is standard equipment on all instrument clusters. However, on vehicles not equipped with an optional automatic transmission, this indicator is electronically disabled. The gear selector indicator information is displayed within the cluster multi-function indicator Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) or dot matrix display unit located near the center of the instrument cluster, between the analog speedometer and the tachometer.
The gear selector indicator displays the following characters as they are selected: P , R , N , D , 4 , 3 , 2 or 1. Respectively, these characters represent the currently selected PARK, REVERSE, NEUTRAL, DRIVE, FOURTH gear, THIRD gear, SECOND gear and FIRST gear positions of the automatic transmission gear selector lever on the instrument panel.
The indications of the gear selector indicator are not visible unless the multi-function indicator is illuminated and the engine is running. On vehicles without the optional steering wheel buttons, only the selected gear position is displayed and it appears as a dark character silhouetted against a light field. On vehicles with the optional steering wheel buttons, the P , R , N and D indications appear as light characters silhouetted against a dark field except for the selected gear position which is a dark character highlighted within a lighted box. The D is a reconfigurable character which will change to the numbers 1 through 4 as those gear positions are selected.
With the exterior lighting turned OFF, the display is illuminated at maximum brightness. With the exterior lighting turned ON, the display illumination level can be adjusted in concert with the cluster general illumination lighting using the + (plus) and - (minus) multi-function indicator push buttons.
The gear selector indicator is serviced as a unit with the instrument cluster.
