INSTALLATION
WARNING: ON VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AIRBAGS, DISABLE THE AIRBAG SYSTEM BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANY STEERING WHEEL, STEERING COLUMN, SEAT BELT TENSIONER, OR INSTRUMENT PANEL COMPONENT DIAGNOSIS OR SERVICE. DISCONNECT AND ISOLATE THE BATTERY NEGATIVE (GROUND) CABLE, THEN WAIT TWO MINUTES FOR THE AIRBAG SYSTEM CAPACITOR TO DISCHARGE BEFORE PERFORMING FURTHER DIAGNOSIS OR SERVICE. THIS IS THE ONLY SURE WAY TO DISABLE THE AIRBAG SYSTEM. FAILURE TO TAKE THE PROPER PRECAUTIONS COULD RESULT IN ACCIDENTAL AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY.
1. Position the Electronic Ignition Switch (EIS) (4) and the rear shim (3) to the back of the instrument panel and reconnect the EIS wire harness connector.
2. On vehicles with an automatic transmission, reconnect the shift lock cable connection to the EIS at the arrow location (5).
NOTE: The guide of the shift lock cable on the EIS control unit (arrow) should point downward.
NOTE: Two shims may be present (2 and 3). If present, ensure that the smaller shim (2) is installed between the EIS bezel and the outer surface of the instrument panel. The larger shim (3) is installed between the EIS assembly (4) and the inner surface of the instrument panel.
3. Use the EIS bezel wrench (Special Tool 10086) to tighten the EIS bezel (1). Tighten the bezel to 7 Nm (5 ft. lbs.).
4. Reinstall the left floor duct screw (1).
5. Position the lower steering column opening cover (2), and the side cover (4) to the instrument panel.
6. Install and tighten the screws (1 and 3) that secure the lower steering column opening cover and the side cover to the instrument panel.
7. Reconnect the battery negative cable
8. If the original EIS was communicating on the CAN Bus, use the scan tool to transfer the basic vehicle configuration to the new EIS. Otherwise, use the scan tool to download the correct flash file for the vehicle, and program the new EIS control unit.
9. Using the scan tool, program the EIS to recognize the existing key fobs.
10. For vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, verify that it is possible to shift the transmission gear selector lever out of the P (PARK) position with the ignition switch in the ON position and the brake pedal depressed. It should only be possible to turn the key back to the LOCK position and remove the key from the switch when the gear selector lever is in the P (PARK) position.
