REMOVAL
WARNING: To avoid serious or fatal injury on vehicles equipped with airbags, disable the supplemental restraint system before attempting any steering wheel, steering column, airbag, seat belt tensioner, impact sensor, or instrument panel component diagnosis or service. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative (ground) cable, then wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before performing further diagnosis or service. This is the only sure way to disable the supplemental restraint system. Failure to take the proper precautions could result in accidental airbag deployment.
NOTE: Several versions of the Roof Control Module (RCM) (also known as the Overhead Control Panel/OCP control unit or DBE) are available, which vary depending upon the standard and optional vehicle equipment. Be certain that a new RCM is the correct replacement for one that is being removed.
1. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable.
2. Unsnap and remove the right front dome/reading lamp lens from the Overhead Control Panel (OCP) housing (2).
3. Insert a small screwdriver into each of the two access notches (3) on the right side of the OCP housing to depress the spring clip inward toward the center of the vehicle while pulling the adjacent edge of the housing down out of the headliner (1) mounting hole.
4. Slide the OCP housing toward the right side of the vehicle far enough to disengage the two fixed retention tabs from the left side of the headliner mounting hole.
5. Lower the OCP from the headliner far enough to access and disconnect the wire harness connection from the receptacle on the top of the Roof Control Module (RCM) and from the hands-free microphone if the vehicle is so equipped.
6. Remove the RCM and the OCP from the vehicle as a unit.
