Service Procedure

Reconfiguring the Instrument Cluster

NOTE:
This procedure must be performed using StarSCAN with release 8.04 or higher before this procedure can be performed. The software release level is visible in the blue header at the top of the StarSCAN screen. If the instrument cluster reconfiguration is aborted or interrupted, repeat the procedure.

1. Open the hood. Install a battery charger and verify that the charging rate provides 13.0 to 13.5 volts. If the battery charger is timer controlled, set the battery charger to continuous charge. Do not allow the charger to time out during the reconfiguration process.

NOTE:
Use an accurate stand alone voltmeter. The battery charger voltmeter may not be sufficiently accurate. Voltages outside of the specified range will cause an unsuccessful reconfigure. If voltage reading is too high, apply an electrical load by activating the park or headlamps and/or HVAC blower motor to lower the voltage.

2. Remove the OBD/fuse cover located at the lower left side of the steering column and open the black plastic cover of the data link connector. Connect the CH9404D vehicle cable to the StarSCAN and the vehicle data link connector.

3. Turn the ignition key to the "RUN" position.

4. While viewing the odometer display, depress the upper left button on the instrument cluster "once" on a high line cluster, or "twice" on a low line cluster.

NOTE:
Vehicles with a high line cluster will have a needle type fuel gauge and will display the words "Service A in XXX miles". Vehicles with a low line cluster will have a bar type fuel gauge and the symbol of a wrench to the left of the service interval mileage.

5. Record the number of miles remaining for the next service interval shown on the ASSYST.

6. Power ON the StarSCAN.

7. Select "ECU View".

8. Select "CCN Instrument Cluster/Cabin Compartment".

9. Select "Misc Functions".

10. Select "Update Service Interval".

11. Press "Start".

12. A message box will appear indicating "This routine will update the service interval on a gasoline equipped vehicle. The service interval will be changed to 10000 miles".

13. Press "Next".

14. A message box will appear indicating "Service Interval was updated successfully".

15. Press "Finish"

16. Check the ASSYST to verify the reconfiguration using the following procedure:

a. Verify the ignition key is in the "ON" position.

b. While viewing the odometer display, depress the upper left button on the instrument cluster "once" on a high line cluster, or "twice" on a low line cluster.

c. Verify that the remaining number of miles for the next service interval shown on the ASSYST has decreased.

NOTE:
If the "mileage" recorded in step #5 of this procedure was less than 10,000 miles, the ASSYST may indicate that service is past due.

17. Turn the ignition key to the "OFF" position.

18. Remove the StarSCAN unit, StarSCAN cable and battery charger from the vehicle.

19. Close the black plastic cover of the data link connector and install the OBD/fuse cover.

20. Return the vehicle to the customer.
