Clockspring

Removal

1. WARNING: Before beginning any service procedure. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.

2. Carrier (3F818)
3. Carrier electrical connector (part of 3F818)
4. Clockspring electrical connector (part of 14401)
5. Anti-rotation key (part of 14A664)







3. WARNING: Turn the ignition OFF and wait one minute to deplete the backup power supply. Ignition must remain OFF until repair is complete. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury or death in the event of an accidental deployment.

If installing a new component for a SRS fault, continue to step 4. Otherwise, turn the ignition OFF, wait at least one minute and continue to step 5.

4. NOTE: The air bag warning indicator illuminates when the correct RCM fuse is removed and the ignition is ON.

Depower the SRS.

5. Remove the steering wheel.
Refer to: Steering Wheel.

6. Disconnect the clockspring electrical connector.
7. Disengage the 6 retaining tabs, push the turn signal cancel lever in and remove the clockspring.







Installation

WARNING: If the clockspring is not correctly centralized, it may fail prematurely. If in doubt, repeat the centralizing procedure. Failure to follow these instructions may increase the risk of serious personal injury or death in a crash.

NOTICE: If installing a new clockspring, do not remove the clockspring anti-rotation key until the steering wheel is installed. If the anti-rotation key has been removed before installing the steering wheel, the clockspring must be centered. Failure to follow this instruction may result in component damage and/or system failure.

1. Make sure the road wheels are in the straight-ahead position.
2. Position the clockspring onto the steering column.

- Align the clockspring to the carrier electrical connector and the 2 pins to the 2 clockspring pin holes.







4. With the clockspring aligned, push the turn signal cancel lever in, push the clockspring in, seating the carrier electrical connector and the retainers.
5. Connect the clockspring electrical connector.
6. If the same clockspring is being installed, remove the tape to prevent accidental rotation.

7. WARNING: If the clockspring is not correctly centralized, it may fail prematurely. If in doubt, repeat the centralizing procedure. Failure to follow these instructions may increase the risk of serious personal injury or death in a crash.

NOTICE: Do not over-rotate the clockspring inner rotor. The internal ribbon wire is connected to the clockspring rotor. The internal ribbon wire acts as a stop and can be broken from its internal connection. Failure to follow this instruction may result in component damage and/or system failure.

If the centralization of the clockspring is in doubt, carry out the following.

1. Rotate the clockspring inner rotor clockwise and carefully feel for the ribbon wire to run out of length with slight resistance. Stop rotating the clockspring inner rotor at this point.
2. Turn the clockspring inner rotor counterclockwise to the 12 o'clock position.
3. Rotate the clockspring inner rotor counterclockwise through 3 full revolutions ending up in the 12 o'clock position. The clockspring is now centered.

9. When the clockspring is correctly centralized, the wire harness is visible through the site glass and the 2 arrows at the bottom are aligned. Make sure the clockspring does not rotate from this position until after the steering wheel is installed.







10. NOTICE: To prevent damage to the clockspring, make sure the road wheels are in the straight-ahead position.

Install the steering wheel.

11.
- If a new clockspring was installed, remove the anti-rotation key before the driver air bag module is installed.

12. If the SRS was depowered, repower the SRS.
