Attachment III - Technical Information

OVERVIEW

In all of the affected vehicles, the fuel tank may have an improper weld at the seam. In the event of a severe impact, an improper weld may result in a fuel leak. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source may result in a fire.

Before demonstrating or delivering any of the vehicles involved in this recall, dealers are to perform the following:

^ Taurus and MKS vehicles - check the "Mold ID" number on the fuel tank and replace as necessary.

^ Explorer vehicles - replace the fuel tank. No inspection is necessary.

INSPECTION - TAURUS / MKS VEHICLES ONLY

1. With the vehicle in neutral, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Workshop Manual (WSM) Section 100-02.





2. Inspect the "Mold ID" number located on the bottom (passenger side) of the fuel tank. See Figure 1.

- If the last digit of the "Mold ID" number is "1" no further action is necessary. Return the vehicle to the owner.

- If the last digit of the "Mold ID" number is "2", replace the fuel tank. Refer to "Fuel Tank Replacement".

FUEL TANK REPLACEMENT - ALL VEHICLES

1. Replace the fuel tank. For additional information, refer to the web version of the WSM, Section 310-01. If using DVD version of the WSM, ensure it has a revision date of 3/22/2013 or later.
