Pinpoint Test D: One High Beam Headlamp Is Inoperative
Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 85, Headlamps/Autolamps for schematic and connector information. Diagrams By Number
Normal Operation
When the low beams are on and the multifunction switch is placed in the HIGH BEAM position, the Smart Junction Box (SJB) energizes the high beam relay (integrated into the SJB (Smart Junction Box)) which supplies voltage to the high beam output circuit.
For vehicles not equipped with Daytime Running Lamps (DRL), the high beam output circuit supplies voltage directly to the headlamps.
For vehicles equipped with DRL (Daytime Running Lamps), the high beam output circuit supplies voltage to the coil side of the DRL (Daytime Running Lamps) 2 relay (located in the Battery Junction Box (BJB)). The DRL (Daytime Running Lamps) 2 relay then energizes and supplies voltage to the headlamps for the high beam shutters.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- Headlamp assembly
PINPOINT TEST D : ONE HIGH BEAM HEADLAMP IS INOPERATIVE
NOTICE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
D1 CHECK THE LOW BEAM OPERATION
- Check the operation of the low beams.
Do the low beams operate correctly?
Yes
GO to D2.
No
For vehicles with halogen headlamps, GO to Pinpoint Test B. Pinpoint Test B: One Low Beam Headlamp Is Inoperative - Vehicles With Halogen Headlamps
For vehicles with HID (High Intensity Discharge) headlamps, GO to Pinpoint Test C. Pinpoint Test C: One Low Beam Headlamp Is Inoperative - Vehicles With High Intensity Discharge (HID) Headlamps
D2 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE HEADLAMP
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: Inoperative Headlamp.
- Place the headlamp switch in the HEADLAMPS ON position.
- Place the multifunction switch in the HIGH BEAM position.
- For vehicles with halogen headlamps, measure the voltage between the LH headlamp C1021-4 circuit CLF08 (YE/VT), harness side and ground; or between the RH headlamp C1041-4 circuit CLF08 (YE/VT), harness side and ground.
- For vehicles with HID (High Intensity Discharge) headlamps, measure the voltage between the LH headlamp C1021-10 circuit CLF08 (YE/VT), harness side and ground; or between the RH headlamp C1041-10 circuit CLF08 (YE/VT), harness side and ground.
Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
Yes
For vehicles with halogen headlamps, GO to D3.
For vehicles with HID (High Intensity Discharge) headlamps, INSTALL a new headlamp assembly. REFER to Headlamp Assembly . TEST the system for normal operation.
No
REPAIR circuit CLF08 (YE/VT) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.
D3 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE HEADLAMP USING THE CONNECTOR GROUND
- Measure the voltage between the LH headlamp C1021-4 circuit CLF08 (YE/VT), harness side and the LH headlamp C1021-5 circuit GD120 (BK/GN), harness side; or between the RH headlamp C1041-4 circuit CLF08 (YE/VT), harness side and the RH headlamp C1041-5 circuit GD123 (BK/GY), harness side.
Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
Yes
INSTALL a new headlamp assembly. REFER to Headlamp Assembly . TEST the system for normal operation.
No
REPAIR circuit GD120 (BK/GN) (LH headlamp) or circuit GD123 (BK/GY) (RH headlamp) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.
