Pinpoint Test BH: The Compass Is Inaccurate

NOTE: This procedure is only applicable to vehicles without navigation. If the compass display is inaccurate on a vehicle with navigation, install a new Front Display Interface Module (FDIM).

Normal Operation

When calibrated correctly, the compass module (integral to the auto-dimming interior mirror) provides vehicle directional inputs to the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) which sends the compass information to the FDIM (Front Display Interface Module) over the Medium Speed Controller Area Network (MS-CAN). The FDIM (Front Display Interface Module) displays the vehicle heading based on the selected zone setting.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- Compass zone setting

- Compass calibration

- Compass module (integral to the auto-dimming interior mirror)

PINPOINT TEST BH : THE COMPASS IS INACCURATE

NOTICE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.

BH1 CHECK THE AUTO-DIMMING INTERIOR MIRROR POSITION

- Verify the auto-dimming interior mirror is installed correctly with the compass sensor on the bottom of the mirror.

Is the auto-dimming interior mirror installed correctly?

Yes
GO to BH2.

No
REPOSITION the auto-dimming interior mirror so the compass sensor is located on the bottom of the mirror. REFER to Mirrors. TEST the system for normal operation.

BH2 CHECK THE COMPASS ACCURACY

- Set the zone. Refer to Compass Zone Adjustment .

- Calibrate the compass. Refer to Compass Calibration .

- Observe the compass display with the vehicle pointing in several different directions, as follows:

Direction Compass Display North N Northeast NE East E Southeast SE South S Southwest SW West W Northwest NW

Does the compass display correctly for each direction?

Yes
The compass is OK. The concern may have been caused by an incorrect zone setting, or the compass was out of calibration.

No
INSTALL a new compass module. SET the zone. REFER to Compass Zone Adjustment . CALIBRATE the compass. REFER to Compass Calibration . TEST the system for normal operation.
