Instrument Cluster and Panel Illumination

Instrument Cluster and Panel Illumination

NOTE: The Smart Junction Box (SJB) is also known as the Generic Electronic Module (GEM).

Backlighting System

The backlighting system consists of both dimmable and non-dimmable (fixed) illumination sources. The components of the backlighting system consists of:

- Instrument panel dimmer switch

- SJB (Smart Junction Box)

- Floor shifter

- Headlamp switch

- Hazard flasher lamp switch

- Message center switch

- Steering wheel switches

- Convertible top switch

- Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC)

- Front Controls Interface Module (FCIM)

- Front Display Interface Module (FDIM)

- Door lock control switches

- Window control switches

Dimmable Illumination

The dimmable illumination is used to provide backlighting to the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) , switches, and control components (such as the FCIM (Front Controls Interface Module) and the FDIM (Front Display Interface Module)) when the parking lamps are on.

If the exterior lamps are activated during daytime sunload conditions, the message center illumination remains at full intensity and does not dim from the instrument panel dimmer switch during this condition. If the vehicle travels under a bridge or a tunnel, the low level of ambient light causes the illumination level of the message center to change to the level set by the instrument panel dimmer switch. The message center illumination changes back to full intensity when the intense ambient light is restored.

The level of intensity is adjustable by rotating the instrument panel dimmer switch to increase or decrease intensity.

NOTE: If the battery is disconnected or discharged, or the instrument panel dimmer switch is disconnected, the instrument panel dimmer switch requires calibration. Rotate the instrument panel dimmer switch from the lowest backlighting setting to the DOME LAMP position. This makes sure that all displays are visible under all lighting conditions.

The dimmable backlighting system provides dimmable backlighting to the following components:

- Floor shifter (automatic transmission)

- Headlamp switch

- Hazard flasher lamp switch

- Message center switch

- Steering wheel control switches

- Convertible top switch

- IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster)

- FCIM (Front Controls Interface Module)

- FDIM (Front Display Interface Module)

Fixed Illumination

The fixed (non-dimmable) illumination is used to provide backlighting to switches when the key is in the ACC or RUN position.

The fixed backlighting components are:

- Door lock control switches

- Window control switches
