Removal

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.

2. Remove the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) canister purge valve.

3. Remove the 2 dash boot nuts.

4. Remove the catalytic converter.

5. Disconnect the LH Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) electrical connector.

6. Remove and discard the engine oil filter.

7. NOTE: Use a steering wheel holding device (such as Hunter(R) 28-75-1 or equivalent).
Using a suitable holding device, hold the steering wheel in the straight-ahead position.






8. NOTICE: Do not allow the steering wheel to rotate while the steering column intermediate shaft is disconnected or damage to the clockspring can result. If there is evidence that the wheel has rotated, the clockspring must be removed and recentered. For additional information, refer to Restraints and Safety Systems &/or Air Bag Systems.

Remove the upper bolt from the intermediate steering shaft and position the intermediate steering shaft aside.






9. Remove the 8 nuts and the LH exhaust manifold.
- Discard the nuts and gaskets.


10. Clean and inspect the LH exhaust manifold.

11. Remove and discard the 8 LH exhaust manifold studs.

Installation

1. NOTICE: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of old sealant.

Clean the exhaust manifold mating surface of the cylinder head with metal surface prep. Follow the directions on the packaging.


2. Install 8 new LH exhaust manifold studs.
- Tighten to 12 Nm (106 lb-in).


3. Install new gaskets, the LH exhaust manifold and 8 new nuts.
- Tighten in the sequence shown to 20 Nm (177 lb-in).






4. NOTICE: Do not allow the steering wheel to rotate while the steering column intermediate shaft is disconnected or damage to the clockspring can result. If there is evidence that the wheel has rotated, the clockspring must be removed and recentered. For additional information, refer to Restraints and Safety Systems &/or Air Bag Systems.

Install the intermediate steering shaft and the upper bolt.
- Tighten to 47 Nm (35 lb-ft).






5. Install a new engine oil filter.
- Lubricate the oil filter gasket with clean engine oil and tighten until the seal makes contact.

- Using an oil filter strap wrench, tighten the filter an additional 270 degrees.






6. Connect the LH HO2S (Heated Oxygen Sensor) electrical connector.

7. Install the catalytic converter.

8. Install the 2 dash boot nuts.
- Tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).


9. Install the EVAP (Evaporative Emission) canister purge valve.
