Pinpoint Test AS: DTC U0131:87
Normal Operation
- DTC U0131:87 (Lost Communication With Power Steering Control Module: No Sub-Type Information)- sets in the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) if data messages received from the Power Steering Control Module (PSCM) over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) are missing for more than 5 seconds. For a complete list of all network messages, refer to Information Bus.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- PSCM (Power Steering Control Module) (part of the steering gear)
- IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster)
PINPOINT TEST AS : DTC U0131:87
AS1 VERIFY THE CUSTOMER CONCERN
- Ignition ON.
- Verify that there is an observable symptom present.
Is an observable symptom present?
Yes
GO to AS2.
No
The system is operating normally at this time. The DTC may have been set due to high network traffic or an intermittent fault condition.
AS2 CHECK THE COMMUNICATION NETWORK
- Ignition ON.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test.
- Carry out the network test.
Does the PSCM (Power Steering Control Module) pass the network test?
Yes
GO to AS3.
No
REFER to Information Bus.
AS3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) AND PSCM (Power Steering Control Module) SELF-TESTS
- Check for recorded DTCs from the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) and PSCM (Power Steering Control Module) self-tests.
Is DTC U3003:16 or DTC U3003:17 recorded?
Yes
For the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) , GO to Pinpoint Test AY (U3003:16) Pinpoint Test AY: DTC U3003:16 or GO to Pinpoint Test AZ (U3003:17) Pinpoint Test AZ: DTC U3003:17.
For the PSCM (Power Steering Control Module) , REFER to Steering.
No
GO to AS4.
AS4 RECHECK THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) DTCs
NOTE: If new modules were installed prior to the DTC being set, the module configuration may be incorrectly set during the Programmable Module Installation (PMI) or the PMI (Programmable Module Installation) may not have been carried out.
- Clear the DTCs. Repeat the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) self-test.
Is DTC U0131:87 still present?
Yes
GO to AS5.
No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The DTC may have been set due to high network traffic or an intermittent fault condition.
AS5 CHECK FOR DTC U0131:87 SET IN OTHER MODULES
- Clear the DTCs.
- Ignition OFF.
- Ignition ON.
- Wait 10 seconds.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Self-Test.
- Retrieve the continuous memory DTCs from all modules.
Is DTC U0131:00 set in the ABS module?
Yes
INSTALL a new steering gear. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) self-test.
No
INSTALL a new IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster). REFER to Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) . TEST the system for normal operation.
