Removal and Replacement

Driveshaft - 5.0L and 5.4L

Removal and Installation

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.

2. Disconnect the LH intermediate pipe from the H-pipe and position aside.

3. Index-mark the driveshaft at both ends to maintain alignment during installation.

4. Remove and discard the 3 driveshaft CV joint bolt and washer assemblies and disconnect the CV joint from the pinion flange.
- To install, tighten the new bolts evenly in a star pattern to 55 Nm (41 lb-ft).

5. Support the front and rear ends of the driveshaft.

6. Remove and discard the 4 driveshaft flange bolts.
- To install, tighten the new bolts evenly in a cross pattern to 103 Nm (76 lb-ft).

7. NOTE: The driveshaft flanges fit tightly on the transmission flange pilot. Never hammer on the driveshaft or any of its components to disconnect the driveshaft flange from the transmission flange pilot. Pry only in the area shown, with a suitable tool, to disconnect the driveshaft flange from the transmission flange pilot.
Using a suitable tool as shown, disconnect the driveshaft flange from the transmission flange pilot.

8. NOTE: Install the center bearing spacers between the body and the center bearing bracket.
Remove and discard the 2 center bearing bolts and spacers, then remove the driveshaft.

- Install the new center bearing bolts finger-tight until the front and rear flanges are tightened to specifications.
- To install, tighten the bolts to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).

9. NOTICE: Do not disassemble the center CV joint when serving the driveshaft. Disassembly of the center CV joint will require the driveshaft to be balanced at a speed of at least 3000 rpm.

NOTE: If new driveshaft flange bolts or center bearing bolts are not available, coat the threads of the original bolts with threadlock and sealer and reuse the original washers and spacers.

NOTE: The driveshaft flanges fit tightly on the transmission output flange pilot. To make sure that the driveshaft flange seats squarely on the transmission output flange, tighten the driveshaft flange bolts evenly in a cross pattern.
To install, reverse the removal procedure.
