MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP (MIL) ON WITH
DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) - P0456

2012 Fusion

ISSUE
Some 2012 Fusion vehicles may exhibit an illuminated MIL with DTC P0456 stored in the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).

ACTION
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Remove the left rear wheel and tire assembly. Refer to WSM, Section 204-04.

2. Remove the three (3) rivets, six (6) pin-type retainers and the left rear splash shield.





3. Plug the fuel tank filler pipe housing drain hole using Motorcraft(R) Clear Silicone Rubber, or equivalent. (Figure 1A)

4. Determine vehicle build date.

a. If the build date is on or before 5/23/2012, proceed to Step 5.

b. If the build date is after 5/23/2012, proceed to Step 6.





5. Inspect for presence of a fill pipe drain tube and install, if not equipped. (Figures 1B and 2)

6. Install the left rear splash shield by reversing the removal procedure.

7. Install the left rear wheel and tire assembly, and lower the vehicle.

8. Insert and remove the Supplemental Refueling Adapter (SRA) into fuel tank filler pipe five (5) times, leaving it fully inserted for one (1) minute before removing. Refer to Owner Guide for location of SRA in the vehicle.





9. Using compressed air regulated at 620 kPa (90 psi), apply five (5) short bursts of air onto the capless fuel tank filler pipe door seal. (Figure 3)

10. Clear all continuous codes from the PCM.
