Pinpoint Test AC: No Medium Speed Controller Area Network (MS-CAN) Communication, All Modules Are Not Responding

Normal Operation
The Medium Speed Controller Area Network (MS-CAN) uses an unshielded twisted pair cable, circuits VDB06 (GY/OG) and VDB07 (VT/OG).
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM) (if equipped)
- Audio Control Module (ACM)
- Audio Digital Signal Processing (DSP) module (if equipped)
- Driver Door Module (DDM) (if equipped)
- Driver Seat Module (DSM) (if equipped)
- Dual Climate Controlled Seat Module (DCSM) (if equipped)
- Front Controls Interface Module (FCIM)
- Front Display Interface Module (FDIM)
- Global Positioning System Module (GPSM) (if equipped)
- HVAC module (if equipped)
- Interior Lighting Control Module (ILCM) (if equipped)
- Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) (gateway module)
- Parking Aid Module (PAM) (if equipped)
- Smart Junction Box (SJB)
- Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Left (SOD-L) (if equipped)
- Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Right (SOD-R) (if equipped)
PINPOINT TEST AC : NO MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) COMMUNICATION, ALL MODULES ARE NOT RESPONDING
NOTICE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
NOTE: Most faults are due to connector and/or wiring concerns. Carry out a thorough inspection and verification before proceeding with the pinpoint test. Module Communications Network
NOTE: Failure to disconnect the battery when instructed will result in false resistance readings.
AC1 CHECK THE DLC (Data Link Connector) PINS FOR DAMAGE
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect the scan tool cable from the Data Link Connector (DLC).
- Inspect DLC (Data Link Connector) pins 3 and 11 for damage.
Are DLC (Data Link Connector) pins 3 and 11 OK?
Yes
GO to AC2.
No
REPAIR the DLC (Data Link Connector) as necessary. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.
AC2 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) TERMINATION RESISTANCE
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: Negative Battery Cable.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.
Is the resistance between 54 and 66 ohms?
Yes
GO to AC3.
No
GO to AC5.
AC3 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and ground; and between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side and ground.
Are the resistances greater than 1,000 ohms?
Yes
GO to AC4.
No
GO to AC32.
AC4 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
- Connect: Negative Battery Cable.
- Ignition ON.
- Measure the voltage between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and ground; and between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side and ground.
Is the voltage greater than 6 volts?
Yes
REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.
No
The MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) has tested within specifications. GO to Pinpoint Test AB to diagnose the intermittent MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) fault. Pinpoint Test AB: Intermittent No Medium Speed Controller Area Network Communication Modules Are Not Responding During Network
AC5 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) TERMINATION RESISTOR
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.
Is the resistance between 108 and 132 ohms?
Yes
GO to AC6.
No
GO to AC9.
AC6 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) TERMINATION RESISTOR WITH THE SJB (Smart Junction Box) DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: Smart Junction Box (SJB) C2280B.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.
Is the resistance between 108 and 132 ohms?
Yes
GO to AC7.
No
GO to AC8.
AC7 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) CIRCUITS BETWEEN THE SJB (Smart Junction Box) AND THE DLC (Data Link Connector) FOR AN OPEN
- Measure the resistance between the SJB (Smart Junction Box) C2280B-37, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side.
- Measure the resistance between the SJB (Smart Junction Box) C2280B-38, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.
Are the resistances less than 5 ohms?
Yes
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AC53.
No
REPAIR the circuit in question. CONNECT the negative battery cable. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.
AC8 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) CIRCUITS BETWEEN THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) AND THE DLC (Data Link Connector) FOR AN OPEN
- Disconnect: Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) C220.
- For gasoline engine, measure the resistance between the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) C220-12, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side.
- For gasoline engine, measure the resistance between the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) C220-13, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.
- For hybrid engine, measure the resistance between the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) C220-2, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side.
- For hybrid engine, measure the resistance between the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) C220-1, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.
Are the resistances less than 5 ohms?
Yes
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AC61.
No
REPAIR the circuit in question. CONNECT the negative battery cable. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.
AC9 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
GO to AC11.
No
GO to AC10.
AC10 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.
Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?
Yes
REPAIR the circuit in question. CONNECT the negative battery cable. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.
No
A capacitor internal to a module may still be draining, causing irregular resistance readings. WAIT 5 minutes. REPEAT this pinpoint test.
AC11 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE SJB (Smart Junction Box) DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: SJB (Smart Junction Box) C2280B.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
If the vehicle is equipped with a Parking Aid Module (PAM), GO to AC12.
If the vehicle is not equipped with a PAM (Parking Aid Module) , GO to AC13.
No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AC53.
AC12 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE PAM (Parking Aid Module) DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: PAM (Parking Aid Module) C4014.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
GO to AC13.
No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AC54.
AC13 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE ACM (Audio Control Module) DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: Audio Control Module (ACM) C240C.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
If the vehicle is equipped with an audio Digital Signal Processing (DSP)
module, GO to AC14.
If the vehicle is not equipped with an audio DSP (Digital Signal Processing) module, GO to AC15.
No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AC55.
AC14 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE AUDIO DSP (Digital Signal Processing) MODULE DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: Audio DSP (Digital Signal Processing) Module C4235A.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
GO to AC15.
No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AC56.
AC15 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE FCIM (Front Controls Interface Module) DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: Front Controls Interface Module (FCIM) C2402 (With Navigation, MKZ), C2403 (Without Navigation) or C2408 (With Navigation, Except MKZ).
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
If the vehicle is equipped with a Front Display Interface Module (FDIM), GO to AC16.
If the vehicle is not equipped with an FDIM (Front Display Interface Module) , GO to AC17.
No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AC57.
AC16 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE FDIM (Front Display Interface Module) DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: FDIM (Front Display Interface Module) C2407.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
GO to AC17.
No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AC58.
AC17 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE HVAC MODULE DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: HVAC Module C2357A (Manual) or C2356A (Dual Automatic Temperature Control (DATC)).
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
If the vehicle is equipped with a Global Positioning System Module (GPSM), GO to AC18.
If the vehicle is not equipped with a GPSM (Global Positioning System Module) , GO to AC19.
No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AC59.
AC18 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE GPSM (Global Positioning System Module) DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: GPSM (Global Positioning System Module) C2300.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
GO to AC19.
No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AC60.
AC19 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) C220.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
If the vehicle is equipped with an Interior Lighting Control Module (ILCM), GO to AC20.
If the vehicle is not equipped with an ILCM (Interior Lighting Control Module) , GO to AC21.
No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AC61.
AC20 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE ILCM (Interior Lighting Control Module) DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: ILCM (Interior Lighting Control Module) C2301.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
GO to AC21.
No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AC62.
AC21 VERIFY VEHICLE EQUIPMENT - DSM (Driver Seat Module)
- Verify whether the vehicle is equipped with a Driver Seat Module (DSM).
Is the vehicle equipped with a DSM (Driver Seat Module)?
Yes
GO to AC22.
No
GO to AC23.
AC22 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE DSM (Driver Seat Module) DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: DSM (Driver Seat Module) C3299D.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
GO to AC23.
No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AC63.
AC23 VERIFY VEHICLE EQUIPMENT - DCSM (Dual Climate Controlled Seat Module)
- Verify whether the vehicle is equipped with a Dual Climate Controlled Seat Module (DCSM).
Is the vehicle equipped with a DCSM (Dual Climate Controlled Seat Module)?
Yes
GO to AC24.
No
GO to AC25.
AC24 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE DCSM (Dual Climate Controlled Seat Module) DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: DCSM (Dual Climate Controlled Seat Module) C3305C.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
GO to AC25.
No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AC64.
AC25 VERIFY VEHICLE EQUIPMENT - APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module)
- Verify whether the vehicle is equipped with an Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM).
Is the vehicle equipped with an APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module)?
Yes
GO to AC26.
No
GO to AC27.
AC26 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module) DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module) C3338.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
GO to AC27.
No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AC65.
AC27 VERIFY VEHICLE EQUIPMENT - DDM (Driver Door Module)
- Verify whether the vehicle is equipped with a Driver Door Module (DDM).
Is the vehicle equipped with a DDM (Driver Door Module)?
Yes
GO to AC28.
No
GO to AC29.
AC28 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE DDM (Driver Door Module) DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: DDM (Driver Door Module) C568B.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
GO to AC29.
No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AC66.
AC29 VERIFY VEHICLE EQUIPMENT - SIDE OBSTACLE DETECTION
- Verify whether the vehicle is equipped with side obstacle detection.
Is the vehicle equipped with side obstacle detection?
Yes
GO to AC30.
No
REPAIR the circuits. CONNECT all modules. CONNECT the negative battery cable. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.
AC30 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE SOD-L (Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Left) DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Left (SOD-L) C4230.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
GO to AC31.
No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AC67.
