Pinpoint Test AC: No Medium Speed Controller Area Network (MS-CAN) Communication, All Modules Are Not Responding

Normal Operation
The Medium Speed Controller Area Network (MS-CAN) uses an unshielded twisted pair cable, circuits VDB06 (GY/OG) and VDB07 (VT/OG).
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM) (if equipped)
- Audio Control Module (ACM)
- Audio Digital Signal Processing (DSP) module (if equipped)
- Driver Door Module (DDM) (if equipped)
- Driver Seat Module (DSM) (if equipped)
- Dual Climate Controlled Seat Module (DCSM) (if equipped)
- Front Controls Interface Module (FCIM)
- Front Display Interface Module (FDIM)
- Global Positioning System Module (GPSM) (if equipped)
- HVAC module (if equipped)
- Interior Lighting Control Module (ILCM) (if equipped)
- Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) (gateway module)
- Parking Aid Module (PAM) (if equipped)
- Smart Junction Box (SJB)
- Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Left (SOD-L) (if equipped)
- Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Right (SOD-R) (if equipped)
PINPOINT TEST AC : NO MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) COMMUNICATION, ALL MODULES ARE NOT RESPONDING
NOTICE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
NOTE: Most faults are due to connector and/or wiring concerns. Carry out a thorough inspection and verification before proceeding with the pinpoint test. Module Communications Network
NOTE: Failure to disconnect the battery when instructed will result in false resistance readings.
AC31 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE SOD-R (Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Right) DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Right (SOD-R) C4229.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
REPAIR the circuit. CONNECT all modules. CONNECT the negative battery cable. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.
No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AC68.
AC32 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WITH THE SJB (Smart Junction Box) DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: SJB (Smart Junction Box) C2280B.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and ground; and between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side and ground.
Are the resistances greater than 1,000 ohms?
Yes
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AC53.
No
If the vehicle is equipped with a Parking Aid Module (PAM), GO to AC33.
If the vehicle is not equipped with a PAM (Parking Aid Module) , GO to AC34.
AC33 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WITH THE PAM (Parking Aid Module) DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: PAM (Parking Aid Module) C4014.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and ground; and between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side and ground.
Are the resistances greater than 1,000 ohms?
Yes
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AC54.
No
GO to AC34.
AC34 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WITH THE ACM (Audio Control Module) DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: Audio Control Module (ACM) C240C.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and ground; and between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side and ground.
Are the resistances greater than 1,000 ohms?
Yes
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AC55.
No
If the vehicle is equipped with an audio Digital Signal Processing (DSP) module, GO to AC35.
If the vehicle is not equipped with an audio DSP (Digital Signal Processing) module, GO to AC36.
AC35 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WITH THE AUDIO DSP (Digital Signal Processing) MODULE DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: Audio DSP (Digital Signal Processing) Module C4235A.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and ground; and between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side and ground.
Are the resistances greater than 1,000 ohms?
Yes
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AC56.
No
GO to AC37.
AC36 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WITH THE FCIM (Front Controls Interface Module) DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: Front Controls Interface Module (FCIM) C2402 (With Navigation, MKZ), C2403 (Without Navigation) or C2408 (With Navigation, Except MKZ).
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and ground; and between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side and ground.
Are the resistances greater than 1,000 ohms?
Yes
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AC57.
No
If the vehicle is equipped with a Front Display Interface Module (FDIM), GO to AC37.
If the vehicle is not equipped with an FDIM (Front Display Interface Module) , GO to AC38.
AC37 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WITH THE FDIM (Front Display Interface Module) DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: FDIM (Front Display Interface Module) C2407.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and ground; and between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side and ground.
Are the resistances greater than 1,000 ohms?
Yes
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AC58.
No
GO to AC38.
AC38 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WITH THE HVAC MODULE DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: HVAC Module C2357A (Manual) or C2356A (Dual Automatic Temperature Control (DATC)).
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and ground; and between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side and ground.
Are the resistances greater than 1,000 ohms?
Yes
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AC59.
No
If the vehicle is equipped with a Global Positioning System Module (GPSM), GO to AC39.
If the vehicle is not equipped with a GPSM (Global Positioning System Module) , GO to AC40.
AC39 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WITH THE GPSM (Global Positioning System Module) DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: GPSM (Global Positioning System Module) C2300.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and ground; and between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side and ground.
Are the resistances greater than 1,000 ohms?
Yes
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AC60.
No
GO to AC40.
AC40 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WITH THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) C220.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and ground; and between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side and ground.
Are the resistances greater than 1,000 ohms?
Yes
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AC61.
No
If the vehicle is equipped with an Interior Lighting Control Module (ILCM), GO to AC41.
If the vehicle is not equipped with an ILCM (Interior Lighting Control Module) , GO to AC42.
AC41 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WITH THE ILCM (Interior Lighting Control Module) DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: ILCM (Interior Lighting Control Module) C2301.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and ground; and between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side and ground.
Are the resistances greater than 1,000 ohms?
Yes
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AC62.
No
GO to AC42.
AC42 VERIFY VEHICLE EQUIPMENT - DSM (Driver Seat Module)
- Verify whether the vehicle is equipped with a Driver Seat Module (DSM).
Is the vehicle equipped with a DSM (Driver Seat Module)?
Yes
GO to AC43.
No
GO to AC44.
AC43 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WITH THE DSM (Driver Seat Module) DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: DSM (Driver Seat Module) C3299D.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and ground; and between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side and ground.
Are the resistances greater than 1,000 ohms?
Yes
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AC63.
No
GO to AC44.
AC44 VERIFY VEHICLE EQUIPMENT - DCSM (Dual Climate Controlled Seat Module)
- Verify whether the vehicle is equipped with a Dual Climate Controlled Seat Module (DCSM).
Is the vehicle equipped with a DCSM (Dual Climate Controlled Seat Module)?
Yes
GO to AC45.
No
GO to AC46.
AC45 CHECK THE MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (+) AND MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WITH THE DCSM (Dual Climate Controlled Seat Module) DISCONNECTED
- Disconnect: DCSM (Dual Climate Controlled Seat Module) C3305C.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and ground; and between the DLC (Data Link Connector) C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side and ground.
Are the resistances greater than 1,000 ohms?
Yes
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AC64.
No
GO to AC46.
AC46 VERIFY VEHICLE EQUIPMENT - APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module)
- Verify whether the vehicle is equipped with an Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM).
Is the vehicle equipped with an APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module)?
Yes
GO to AC47.
No
GO to AC48.
