Pinpoint Test AS: The Charging System Message Center Warning Indicator Is Never/Always On
Normal Operation
The charging system indicator is controlled by the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) based upon data received from the PCM (non-hybrid) or the DC to DC Converter Control Module (DC/DC) (hybrid) over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) communication bus.
If the charging system message is missing for less than 5 seconds, the charging system message center warning indicator remains in the last state (on or off) based upon the last known good message received. If the charging system message is missing for more than 5 seconds, the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) sets DTC U0100:00 (non-hybrid) or DTC U0298:00 (hybrid) in continuous memory and defaults the charging system warning indicator on.
NOTE: If DTC U0100:00 is set in the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) , other observable symptoms may be an inoperative speedometer, tachometer or odometer.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Charging system concern
- PCM (non-hybrid)
- DC/DC (DC to DC Converter Control Module) (hybrid)
- IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster)
PINPOINT TEST AS : THE CHARGING SYSTEM MESSAGE CENTER WARNING INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON
AS1 CHECK THE MESSAGE CENTER OPERATION
- Close all doors and the luggage compartment lid.
- Ignition ON.
- Open the driver door while monitoring the message center displays.
Does the message center display the door ajar message center warning indicator along with the DRIVER DOOR AJAR text?
Yes
For non-hybrid, GO to AS2.
For hybrid, GO to AS4.
No
INSTALL a new IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster). REFER to Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) . TEST the system for normal operation.
AS2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE PCM KOEO (Key ON Engine OFF) SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded PCM DTCs from the Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO) self-test.
Are any charging system DTCs recorded?
Yes
REFER to Charging System.
No
GO to AS3.
AS3 CHECK THE CHARGING SYSTEM OPERATION
- Check the charging system operation.
Does the charging system operate correctly?
Yes
GO to AS4.
No
REFER to Charging System.
AS4 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded DTCs from the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) self-test.
Are any DTCs recorded?
Yes
For DTC U0100:00, GO to Pinpoint Test BF. Pinpoint Test BF: DTC U0100:00
For DTC U0298:00, GO to Pinpoint Test BW. Pinpoint Test BW: DTC U0298:00
REFER to DTC Charts. Instrumentation, Message Center and Warning Chimes
No
If the charging system warning indicator is never on, the system is operating correctly at this time.
If the charging system warning indicator is always on for non-hybrid vehicles, INSTALL a new PCM. TEST the system for normal operation.
If the charging system warning indicator is always on for hybrid vehicles, REFER to Hybrid Drive Systems to diagnose the DC/DC (DC to DC Converter Control Module) charging system. TEST the system for normal operation.
