Pinpoint Test E: One or More Switch Illumination Is Inoperative

Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 71, Cluster and Panel Illumination for schematic and connector information. [1][2]Diagrams By Number

Normal Operation

The Smart Junction Box (SJB) sends a Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) voltage to the dimmable components. When the accessory delay relay is energized, voltage is supplied to the door lock control switches (Fusion), roof opening panel switch and the cigar lighter.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- Wiring, terminals or connectors

- Ambient lighting/traction control switch (Fusion)

- Cigar lighter (MKZ)

- Luggage compartment lid release switch

- Door lock control switches (MKZ)

- Floor shifter

- Hazard flasher lamp switch (Fusion)

- Headlamp switch

- Instrument panel dimmer switch

- Memory set switch (MKZ)

- Message center switch (Fusion)

- Roof opening panel switch (if equipped)

- Window control switches (MKZ)

- Floor shifter

- SJB (Smart Junction Box)

PINPOINT TEST E : ONE OR MORE SWITCH ILLUMINATION IS INOPERATIVE

NOTICE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.

E1 CHECK THE VOLTAGE TO THE SINGLE ILLUMINATION SOURCE

NOTE: If the headlamp switch is the inoperative source, unplug the headlamp switch connector to measure the illumination circuit voltage. Unplugging the connector causes the SJB (Smart Junction Box) to turn the exterior lights on by default for 10 minutes, so it is unnecessary to turn the headlamp switch on.

- Ignition OFF.

- Disconnect: Inoperative Illumination Source.

- Ignition ON.

- Place the headlamp switch in the PARKING LAMPS ON position.

- Increase the backlighting brightness to the highest setting.

- Measure the voltage between the inoperative illumination source, harness side and ground as follows:

Fusion

Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?

Yes
For the instrument panel dimmer switch, window control switch, cigar lighter, door lock control switch, roof opening panel switch, luggage compartment lid release switch, ambient lighting/traction control switch, hazard flasher lamp switch, or floor shifter, INSTALL a new component in question. TEST the system for normal operation.

For all others, GO to E2.

No
REPAIR the voltage supply circuit in question for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.

E2 CHECK THE VOLTAGE TO THE SINGLE ILLUMINATION SOURCE USING THE CONNECTOR GROUND

- Measure the voltage between the inoperative illumination source connector, harness side as follows:
