Pinpoint Test L: The Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) Transmitter Is Inoperative
Normal Operation
Remote locking and unlocking of the doors, releasing the luggage compartment lid, and activating the panic alarm is accomplished by the Smart Junction Box (SJB) receiving a command message from the RKE (Remote Keyless Entry) Integrated Keyhead Transmitter (IKT). The IKTs (Integrated Keyhead Transmitters) and SJB (Smart Junction Box) also utilize a rolling code to prevent the code from being "captured" by a code grabber. The system advances the counter in the RKE (Remote Keyless Entry) transmitter and SJB (Smart Junction Box) every time an IKT (Integrated Keyhead Transmitter) button is pressed.
- DTC B1139 (Invalid Transmitter Identification Code)- a continuous DTC that sets when the SJB (Smart Junction Box) detects an invalid Transmitter Identification Code (TIC) from an IKT (Integrated Keyhead Transmitter).
- DTC B2425 (Remote Keyless Entry Out of Synchronization)- a continuous DTC that sets when the SJB (Smart Junction Box) detects the rolling counter received from an RKE (Remote Keyless Entry) transmitter is 1,024 times greater than the rolling counter stored in the module.
- B109E:86 (Remote Keyless Entry: Signal Invalid)- a continuous DTC that sets when the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) detects an invalid TIC (Transmitter Identification Code) from an IKT (Integrated Keyhead Transmitter).
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- IKT (Integrated Keyhead Transmitter)
- IKT (Integrated Keyhead Transmitter) battery
- IKT (Integrated Keyhead Transmitter) button pressed a substantial amount of times while outside the range of the vehicle
- IKT (Integrated Keyhead Transmitter) programming
- SJB (Smart Junction Box)
PINPOINT TEST L : THE RKE (Remote Keyless Entry) TRANSMITTER IS INOPERATIVE
NOTE: All IKT (Integrated Keyhead Transmitter) transmitters must be present to begin diagnosis of the RKE (Remote Keyless Entry) system.
NOTE: Aftermarket or dealer-installed systems may adversely affect the RKE (Remote Keyless Entry) system operation. These systems should be disconnected before diagnosing any RKE (Remote Keyless Entry) concerns.
L1 CHECK FOR THE CORRECT RKE (Remote Keyless Entry) TRANSMITTERS
- NOTE: Make sure the IKTs (Integrated Keyhead Transmitters) are those provided with the OEM system and not from an aftermarket system, or a dealer-installed system that may have been installed on the vehicle.
Check that the correct IKTs (Integrated Keyhead Transmitters) are used with the vehicle. Compare the IKTs (Integrated Keyhead Transmitters) with the one shown in the Description and Operation.
Are all the correct IKTs (Integrated Keyhead Transmitters) present?
Yes
GO to L2.
No
The system cannot be tested without the correct IKTs (Integrated Keyhead Transmitters). INFORM the customer that all the correct IKTs (Integrated Keyhead Transmitters) must be present to proceed with diagnosis of the system.
L2 CHECK THE RECORDED SJB (Smart Junction Box) AND IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) DTCs FROM THE SELF-TEST
- Check the recorded results from the SJB (Smart Junction Box) and IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) self-test.
Is DTC B2425 or DTC B109E:86 recorded?
Yes
For DTC B2425, GO to L3.
For DTC B109E:86, GO to Pinpoint Test R. Pinpoint Test R: B109E:51
No
GO to L4.
L3 RESYNCHRONIZE THE INOPERATIVE IKT (Integrated Keyhead Transmitter)
- Ignition OFF.
- Ignition ON.
- Leave the IKT (Integrated Keyhead Transmitter) key in the ON position for a minimum of 6 seconds.
- Ignition OFF.
- Press any button on the IKT (Integrated Keyhead Transmitter).
Does the IKT (Integrated Keyhead Transmitter) operate?
Yes
The system is OK. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
No
GO to L4.
L4 MAKE SURE THE RKE (Remote Keyless Entry) TRANSMITTER SIGNAL IS BEING RECEIVED
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: SJB (Smart Junction Box) DataLogger.
- Press lock and unlock on the IKT (Integrated Keyhead Transmitter) while observing the SJB (Smart Junction Box) PIDs (TIC_LAST) and (TNSMT_CMD).
Does the TIC (Transmitter Identification Code) and RKE (Remote Keyless Entry) command show up on the scan tool screen when a button is pressed?
Yes
GO to L5.
No
GO to L6.
L5 CHECK IF THE RKE (Remote Keyless Entry) TRANSMITTERS ARE PROGRAMMED
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: SJB (Smart Junction Box) DataLogger.
- Press a button on the IKT (Integrated Keyhead Transmitter) and compare the SJB (Smart Junction Box) PID (TIC_LAST) with the PIDs (TIC_1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 9, or 10).
Does the TIC (Transmitter Identification Code) displayed match any of the TICs (Transmitter Identification Codes) stored in memory?
Yes
GO to L8.
No
PROGRAM the inoperative IKT (Integrated Keyhead Transmitter) individually or PROGRAM all the IKTs (Integrated Keyhead Transmitters). REFER to Antitheft and Alarm Systems for the programming procedures. If all the IKTs (Integrated Keyhead Transmitters) are to be programmed, INFORM the customer that any IKTs (Integrated Keyhead Transmitters) not present need to be programmed. TEST the system for normal operation.
L6 CHECK THE IKT (Integrated Keyhead Transmitter) BATTERY
- Using a thin coin, open the IKT (Integrated Keyhead Transmitter).
- Do not clean off any grease from the battery terminals on the back surface of the circuit board.
- Verify the correct battery is used (CR2032).
- Remove the IKT (Integrated Keyhead Transmitter) battery and measure the voltage.
Is the voltage greater than 2.5 volts?
Yes
GO to L7.
No
INSTALL a new battery (make sure the battery is seated correctly). DO NOT reprogram the IKT (Integrated Keyhead Transmitter) (weak or dead batteries do not erase TICs (Transmitter Identification Codes) from memory). TEST the system for normal operation.
L7 CHECK FOR NORMAL OPERATION WITH A KNOWN GOOD IKT (Integrated Keyhead Transmitter)
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: SJB (Smart Junction Box) DataLogger.
- Use the customer's second IKT (Integrated Keyhead Transmitter) , or a known good RKE (Remote Keyless Entry) transmitter that is correct for the vehicle, press a button on the IKT (Integrated Keyhead Transmitter) while observing the SJB (Smart Junction Box) PID (TIC_LAST).
Does the TIC (Transmitter Identification Code) show up on the scan tool when a button is pressed?
Yes
REPLACE the inoperative IKT (Integrated Keyhead Transmitter) and PROGRAM the inoperative IKT (Integrated Keyhead Transmitter) individually or PROGRAM all the IKTs (Integrated Keyhead Transmitters). REFER to Antitheft and Alarm Systems for the programming procedures. If all the IKTs (Integrated Keyhead Transmitters) are to be programmed, INFORM the customer that any IKTs (Integrated Keyhead Transmitters) not present need to be programmed. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
GO to L8.
L8 CHECK FOR CORRECT SJB (Smart Junction Box) OPERATION
- Disconnect all the SJB (Smart Junction Box) connectors.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- damaged pins
- pushed-out pins
- Connect all the SJB (Smart Junction Box) connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
Yes
INSTALL a new SJB (Smart Junction Box). TEST the system for normal operation.
No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
