Pinpoint Test B: DTC B10D7:87

Normal Operation

- DTC B10D7:87 (PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) Key: Missing Message)- a continuous and on-demand DTC that sets when no Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) key has been read by the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC).

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) key

- PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) transceiver

- IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster)

PINPOINT TEST B : DTC B10D7:87

NOTE: Large metallic objects, electronic devices on the key ring that can be used to purchase gasoline or similar items, or a second key on the same key ring as the PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) key can cause vehicle starting concerns and record DTCs under certain conditions. If a fault cannot be identified, examine the customer key ring for such objects or devices. If present, inform the customer that they need to keep these objects from touching the PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) key while starting the engine. These objects and devices cannot damage the PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) key, but can cause a momentary concern if they are too close to the key during engine start. If a concern occurs, turn the key off and restart the engine with all other objects on the key ring held away from the ignition key. Check to make sure the PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) key used by the customer is an approved Ford PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) key. (PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) keys from Ford, Rotunda, Strattec or Huf are approved Ford PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) keys.)

NOTE: This vehicle uses a Huf Integrated Keyhead Transmitter (IKT) key. If replacing an IKT (Integrated Keyhead Transmitter) key for any of these vehicles, it is recommended that the original Huf IKT (Integrated Keyhead Transmitter) key be replaced with another Huf IKT (Integrated Keyhead Transmitter) key. There are minor visual differences both externally and internally between the Huf IKT (Integrated Keyhead Transmitter) key and IKT (Integrated Keyhead Transmitter) keys used on other Ford and Lincoln vehicles that may be noticed by the customer. These visual differences do not affect the IKT (Integrated Keyhead Transmitter) key functionality in any way. Rotunda should supply a Huf IKT (Integrated Keyhead Transmitter) key when ordering replacement/new keys for this vehicle. The Owner's Literature can provide additional information concerning these differences.
If replacing an IKT (Integrated Keyhead Transmitter) key (or adding another key) with a standard PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) key (not an IKT (Integrated Keyhead Transmitter) key), any of the brands (Ford, Rotunda, Strattec or Huf) can operate the system.

B1 RETRIEVE THE DTCs

- Ignition ON.

- Clear the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) DTCs.

- Ignition OFF.

- Ignition ON.

- Retrieve the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) DTCs.

Is DTC B10D7:87 retrieved?

Yes
GO to B2.

No
If any other IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) DTCs are retrieved, REFER to the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Chart in Body Control Systems. Body Control Systems

If no DTCs are retrieved, the system is OK.

B2 CHECK BOTH PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) KEYS

- Obtain both PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) keys from the customer and follow the procedure using one PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) key, then the other. If the customer only has one PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) key, it is necessary to cut a new PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) key.

- If it is necessary to cut a new PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) key, program the new PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) key. Refer to Integrated Keyhead Transmitter (IKT) Key Programming Using Diagnostic Equipment .

- Ignition ON.

- Clear the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) DTCs.

- Ignition OFF.

- Ignition ON.

- Retrieve the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) DTCs.

Using all existing keys, then the newly programmed key (if applicable), is DTC B10D7:87 present?

Yes
If DTC B10D7:87 was present for both keys or the new key (if present), GO to B3.

If DTC B10D7:87 was not present for the new key, the original key may be damaged and should be replaced. REPLACE the damaged key with a new key. REFER to Integrated Keyhead Transmitter (IKT) Key Programming Using Diagnostic Equipment . CLEAR the DTCs. CYCLE the ignition. REPEAT the self-test. TEST the system for normal operation.

No
If any other IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) DTCs are retrieved, REFER to the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Chart in Body Control Systems. Body Control Systems

If no IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) DTCs are retrieved, the system is OK.

B3 INSTALL A NEW PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) TRANSCEIVER

NOTE: Replacement of the PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) transceiver does not require the PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) keys to be programmed into the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) again.

NOTE: Do not use the PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) key that may have been programmed in Step B2.

- Ignition OFF.

- Install a new PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) transceiver. Refer to Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) Transceiver .

- Ignition ON.

- Clear the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) DTCs.

- Ignition OFF.

- Turn the key to the ON position using an existing customer PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) key.

- Retrieve the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) DTCs.

Is DTC B10D7:87 retrieved?

Yes
GO to B4.

No
The system is OK.

B4 CHECK FOR CORRECT IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) OPERATION

- Disconnect the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) connector.

- Check for:
- corrosion

- damaged pins

- pushed-out pins


- Connect the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) connector and make sure it seats correctly.

- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.

Is the concern still present?

Yes
INSTALL a new IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster). RESET the parameters in both the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) and the PCM. REFER to Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) Parameter Reset . PROGRAM the PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) keys into the new IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster). REFER to Integrated Keyhead Transmitter (IKT) Key Programming Using Diagnostic Equipment . CYCLE the ignition. REPEAT the self-test.

No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. CYCLE the ignition. REPEAT the self-test.
