Removal and Replacement
Transmission - FWD

Removal
1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. REFER to Lifting Points .
2. Remove the ACL (Air Cleaner) assembly and outlet pipe. REFER to Exploded View .
3. Remove the battery and battery tray. REFER to Battery and Battery Tray - Exploded View .
4. Install 303-290-01 , 303-290A-03A and 303-290A.
5. Remove the 4 transmission support insulator nuts and the transmission support insulator bolt. Disconnect the wiring harness retainers and remove the transmission support insulator with the battery tray support bracket.
6. Remove the 3 transmission support insulator bracket bolts and the transmission support insulator bracket.
7. Disconnect the reverse lamp switch electrical connector.
8. Disconnect the gearshift cables from the selector mechanism.
9. Remove the gearshift cables from the gearshift cable bracket. Pull the abutment sleeves rearward, twist and pull up on the cables to remove them from the gearshift cables bracket.
10. Disconnect the clutch hydraulic tube and grommet from the retaining bracket.
11. Remove the 3 upper clutch housing-to-engine bolts.
12. Remove the 8 retainers and the underbody insulator.
13. Remove the drain plug and drain the transmission fluid.
14. Install the drain plug.
- Tighten to 35 Nm (26 lb-ft).
15. Remove the 2 roll restrictor bolts.
16. Remove the 2 roll restrictor-to-transmission bracket bolts and remove the roll restrictor bracket.
17. Remove the LH (Left Hand) halfshaft. REFER to Halfshaft - LH .
18. Remove the RH (Right Hand) front wheel and tire. REFER to Wheel and Tire .
19. Remove and discard the RH (Right Hand) ball joint nut and bolt.
1. Insert a pry bar in the lower control arm body opening and separate the RH (Right Hand) ball joint from the RH (Right Hand) knuckle.
20. Remove and discard the 2 bearing retainer strap nuts and the bearing retainer strap.
21. Remove the RH (Right Hand) halfshaft and intermediate shaft assembly from the transmission and position it aside.
22. Remove the wiring harness retainer from the starter stud bolt, remove the 2 starter relay bracket nuts and position aside the starter relay bracket.
23. Loosen the starter bolts, but do not remove the starter.
24. Remove the clutch hydraulic tube clip, then disconnect the clutch hydraulic tube.
25. NOTICE: The exhaust flexible pipe is supported to keep it from being bent too far while it is disconnected from the tailpipe assembly. Failure to support the exhaust flexible pipe can result in damage to the exhaust flexible pipe.
Support the exhaust flexible pipe.
26. Remove and discard the 2 exhaust flexible pipe-to-muffler and tailpipe assembly nuts and gasket.
27. Remove the 2 exhaust hanger bolts.
28. Remove the 4 bolts and remove the exhaust support bracket.
29. Using 303-290-01 , 303-290A and 303-290A-03A , lower the engine and transmission assembly.
30. Position a high-lift transmission jack under the transmission and secure the transmission. Remove the 8 clutch housing-to-engine bolts. Pull the transmission rearward until the input shaft is clear of the clutch assembly, then lower the transmission from the vehicle.
Installation
1. Install the transmission. Install the 8 clutch housing-to-engine bolts.
- Tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).
2. Using 303-290-01 , 303-290A and 303-290A-03A , raise the engine and transaxle assembly.
3. Install the roll restrictor bracket and the 2 roll restrictor-to-transmission bracket bolts.
- Tighten to 86 Nm (63 lb-ft).
4. Install the 2 roll restrictor bolts.
- Tighten to 86 Nm (63 lb-ft).
5. Install the exhaust support bracket and the 4 exhaust support bracket bolts.
- Tighten the top 2 exhaust support bracket bolts to 50 Nm (37 lb-ft).
- Tighten the bottom 2 exhaust support bracket bolts to 26 Nm (19 lb-ft)
6. Install the 2 exhaust hanger bolts.
- Tighten to 26 Nm (19 lb-ft).
7. Install the new exhaust flexible pipe-to-muffler gasket the 2 exhaust flexible pipe-to-muffler and tailpipe assembly nuts.
- Tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).
8. Connect the clutch hydraulic tube and install the clutch hydraulic tube clip.
9. Tighten the starter stud bolts.
- Tighten to 37 Nm (27 lb-ft).
10. Install the starter relay bracket and the 2 starter relay bracket nuts. Install the wiring retainer on the starter stud bolt.
- Tighten to 11 Nm (97 lb-in).
11. Using the RH (Right Hand) halfshaft seal protector, install the RH (Right Hand) intermediate shaft assembly partially into the transaxle.
12. Remove the RH (Right Hand) halfshaft seal protector and install the RH (Right Hand) intermediate shaft assembly into the transaxle.
13. Install the new bearing retainer strap and the bearing retainer strap nuts. Tighten the bearing strap retainer nuts in 2 stages.
1. Stage 1: Tighten to 6 Nm (53 lb-in).
2. Stage 2: Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
14. Install the new RH (Right Hand) ball joint bolt and nut.
- Tighten to 87 Nm (64 lb-ft).
15. Install the brake hose retainer and the brake hose retainer bolt on the RH (Right Hand) strut.
- Tighten to 11 Nm (97 lb-in).
16. Install the RH (Right Hand) front wheel and tire. REFER to Wheel and Tire .
17. Install the LH (Left Hand) halfshaft. REFER to Halfshaft - LH .
18. Install the underbody insulator and the 8 retainers.
19. Install the 3 upper clutch housing-to-engine bolts.
- Tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).
20. Connect the clutch hydraulic tube and grommet to the retaining bracket.
21. Install the gearshift cables to the gearshift cables bracket. Pull the abutment sleeves rearward, twist and push on the cables to install them on the gearshift cables bracket.
22. Connect the gearshift cables from the selector mechanism.
23. Connect the reverse lamp switch electrical connector.
24. Remove the transmission support insulator bracket and the 3 transmission support insulator bracket bolts.
- Tighten to 86 Nm (63 lb-ft)
25. Install the transmission support insulator with the battery tray support bracket and connect the wiring retainers. Install the 4 transmission support insulator nuts and the transmission support insulator bolt.
- Tighten the support insulator nuts to 50 Nm (37 lb-ft).
- Tighten the support insulator bolt to 150 Nm (111 lb-ft).
26. Install the battery and battery tray. REFER to Battery and Battery Tray - Exploded View .
27. Install the ACL (Air Cleaner) assembly and outlet pipe. REFER to Exploded View .
28. NOTE: Before removing, clean the area around the fill plug.
Remove the fill plug.
29. Using an oil suction gun, fill the transmission to the correct level with the specified transmission fluid. Transmission fluid level: 0 mm (0 in)-5 mm (0.1969 in) below the lower edge of the fill plug bore.
30. Install the fill plug.
- Tighten to 35 Nm (26 lb-ft).
31. Adjust the gearshift cables. REFER to Gearshift Cable Adjustment .
