Rear Knuckle: Service and Repair
Wheel Knuckle
WARNING: Before beginning any service procedure, REFER to Safety Warnings . Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.

NOTE: Rear drum brake equipped vehicle shown, vehicle equipped with rear disc similar.
Removal
NOTICE: Suspension fasteners are critical parts that affect the performance of vital components and systems. Failure of these fasteners may result in major service expense. Use the same or equivalent parts if replacement is necessary. Do not use a replacement part of lesser quality or substitute design. Tighten fasteners as specified.
1. Remove the wheel bearing and wheel hub. REFER to Wheel Bearing and Wheel Hub .
2. Remove the under-body air deflector.
3. Remove the shock absorber lower bolt in the sequence shown.
1. Using a suitable jackstand, support the rearward lower control arm.
2. Remove and discard the shock absorber lower bolt.
4. Vehicles equipped with rear disc brakes, remove the parking brake cable guide bolt and position aside the parking brake cable.
5. Vehicles equipped with rear drum brakes.
1. Disconnect the parking brake cable from the parking brake cable connector.
2. Remove the parking brake cable guide bolt and position aside the parking brake cable.
6. Disconnect the 3 pin-type retainers from the trailing arm and position aside the wheel speed sensor harness.
7. Position aside the brake flexible hose and the wheel speed sensor harness in the sequence shown.
1. Remove and discard the upper control arm outboard bolt and position the brake flexible hose and the wheel speed sensor harness and mounting brackets aside.
2. Remove and discard the forward lower control arm outboard bolt.
8. Remove the wheel knuckle and trailing arm assembly in the sequence shown
1. Remove and discard the rearward lower control arm outboard bolt.
2. Remove and discard the 2 trailing arm bolts and remove the wheel knuckle and trailing arm assembly.
Installation
NOTICE: Suspension fasteners are critical parts that affect the performance of vital components and systems. Failure of these fasteners may result in major service expense. Use the same or equivalent parts if replacement is necessary. Do not use a replacement part of lesser quality or substitute design. Tighten fasteners as specified.
1. NOTE: Do not tighten the bolts at this time.
Position the wheel knuckle and trailing arm assembly.
1. Loosely install the 2 new trailing arm bolts.
2. Loosely install the new rearward lower control arm outboard bolt.
2. NOTE: Do not tighten the bolts at this time.
Position the brake flexible hose and the wheel speed sensor harness in the sequence shown.
1. Loosely install the new forward lower control arm outboard bolt.
2. Position the brake flexible hose and the wheel speed sensor harness and mounting brackets and loosely install the new upper control arm outboard bolt.
3. Position the wheel speed sensor harness and attach the 3 pin-type retainers to the trailing arm.
4. Vehicles equipped with rear drum brakes.
1. Position the parking brake cable and install the parking brake cable guide bolt.
- Tighten to 1.9 Nm (17 lb-in).
2. Connect the parking brake cable to the parking brake cable connector.
5. Vehicles equipped with rear disc brakes, position the parking brake cable and install the parking brake cable guide bolt.
- Tighten to 1.9 Nm (17 lb-in).
6. NOTE: Do not tighten the bolt at this time.
Loosely install the new shock absorber lower bolt.
7. Install the wheel bearing and wheel hub. REFER to Wheel Bearing and Wheel Hub .
8. Lower the vehicle until the weight of the vehicle is resting on the wheels and tires.
9. Tighten the 2 new trailing arm bolts.
- Tighten to 175 Nm (129 lb-ft).
10. Tighten the new rearward lower control arm outboard bolt.
- Tighten to 115 Nm (85 lb-ft).
11. Tighten the new forward lower control arm outboard bolt.
- Tighten to 115 Nm (85 lb-ft).
12. Tighten the new upper control arm outboard bolt.
- Tighten to 115 Nm (85 lb-ft).
13. Tighten the new shock absorber lower bolt.
- Tighten to 115 Nm (85 lb-ft).
14. Install the under-body air deflector.
15. Check and, if necessary, adjust the rear toe. REFER to Toe Adjustment - Rear .
